Hi.. I posted here prevously and am sorry that I didn't continue. My name is Tina and I live in NJ. I have a 6 year old son named Matthew who has pdd-nos and anxiety. He is doing much better then the last time I posted (now on Celexa which helps). He is in 1st grade in an inclusion class. Daddy just had a job interview in Las Vegas and we may be moving. Is there anyone on the board that lives in that area? If so, can you recommend nice areas to live in? Most important is the schools. If we can't find the proper schooling for Matthew, then even if we get the offer, we wouldn't go. He is our number one priority! The good thing is if we did move, Mommy could stay at home which is what Matthew wants. He wants me home so badly. (as it is now I only work 3 week days).. Any advice anyone could give would be very much appreciated. Thanks and have a good night.. Tina Hi, I don't know how what we have here compares to NJ. I've heard people are flocking to NJ for its schools, both private and public. Here, your choices are only public. There are no private schools in Las Vegas specifically for those on the spectrum. I moved from a place that had two to choose from and while there are pro's and con's to going private, at least I had the choice in Texas. Also, here you are dealing with one school district. There are not ISD's as there may be in NJ. I don't want to sound discouraging, I've only been in the school district here since August, and we do have things to work out. It just seems that things here seem somewhat backwards when it comes to inclusion and spec. ed in general. I could be wrong in the long run. Of course, things can vary from school to school, or so I am told. One big difference here is property taxes are relatively low. I pay about 1/4th what I would pay in Texas. Great in one respect, but it also means not much $$ for schools. But I have to say there have been improvements here too. There are more support groups for families. As far as areas to live, both Summerlin (in the north), and Henderson-Green Valley (in the South) are very good suburbs. Both are master-planned and very attractive, in all price ranges. Each also has a nationally-recognized parks system, which includes support for special needs kids in their activities (something we did not have where I was in TX). So I think all in all, Nevada is evolving. It's probably ahead of some areas of the country, but behind many others. Please feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions. I live in the Henderson/Green Valley area and love it. Like LVKim8 said the parks and recreation dept is one of the best in the nation. There is plenty to keep you busy. As far as the schools go, I am new to the special education side of the schools here. Most Henderson/Green Valley schools are fantastic...from what I hear on all fronts(special ed and mainstream classrooms). I have my dd's IEP meeting this Friday..so nervous. But I have had NO problems so far. We got in for a 3 hr. evaluation, now for IEP, feedback and placement. Sorry I can't be more help, but no bad experiences yet. As far as the school district as a whole (and yes it's HUGE), the better schools all depend on the area you live in, again Summerlin and Green Valley/Henderson are great schools. There are also some great developmental doctors that are out here as well. If he gets the job, please feel free to PM me and I can try to answer more of your questions..I've been here for 16 years! Several years ago, a friend ofmine moved to Vegas. At the time, her very high functioning son was entering HS. She was very, very pleased with her experience there. BTW, she moved from NY which seems to be similar to NJ in terms of services. Plus, the education in Vegas is heavily subsidized (from what I've heard) by the revenues from the casinos, so the taxes are low but the services are high. Good luck. Thanks so much for the replies. We are on pins and needles as we don't even know if we are moving. Dh had a job interview 2 weeks ago at a soon to be opened casino and we were told we would either know something last week or this week. It's a great job and it looks good. Does anyone know anything about an area called Centennial Hills? Dh drove around there and said it looked nice. Also he loved Summerlin and Green Valley. He used to live there years ago (in Henderson )(bm- before marriage) and said it had changed so much. I have never been. Before we would move or consider moving also, we would go out as a family to check itout. As I said, right now Matthew is in an inclusion class and doing well. He is way too bright (reading on a 4th grade level) and loves school. But he does have the mild autism and anxiety to which he needs a little extra help at times. I don't want to deter his love of school. I mean now he gets up and says I can't wait to go to school :) You don't hear that often in a child! (I never did! lol)... Also, is there a such thing as a back yard? We have a very rammy beagle that we need to have a little space to let her run. Or at least have a park near by to walk her to. I know everything seems to be gated communities out there. I just hope to hear something this week. Then I can sleep- or maybe not..lol.. Thanks again and nice meeting you all.. Tina ps.. my post said it was moved.. how do I find it elsewhere? I am not familar with this board. Thanks HI ladies.. I have been trying to pm you (LvKim8 and Denae) but it keeps telling me that I don't have sufficient permission to post pms??? I don't understand and am trying this way .... I would love to talk to you both.. Could you email me at Tmm092062@aol.com and we can do it the old fashion way? Thank you so much and have a wonderful day..
