DS allergic to Tylenol????I know this sounds far fetched, but my DH and I think our son is allergic to Tylenol! He has had a fever since Friday, up to 104, so I have been giving him Tylenol every 6 hours or so. He is hyper during the day, and HAS NOT SLEPT FOR 2 NIGHTS. I am not exaggerating here. He has been in our bed for a few weeks (anxiety issues) and he would toss and turn, kick his feet, flop on the pillow, fall on the floor and roll around and talk to me. I finally got up at 4 am this morning and gave him some Benadryl and he fell asleep at 5:45. This is very unusual for him, when he is sick he has no enrgy, stims with his blanket, doesnt want to move etc. This has never happened before. The only thing I can think of is that we gave him 1/2 of an adult tablet, which is 250 mg., less than what he would get with thte liquid childrens Tylenol per his weight (320 mg.) Is there something in the adult tablet that is not in the childrens liquid? I am baffled, any ideas? hmmm... well I know the adult cold medicin is of course stronger and has a chemical the sometimes acts similar to caffeen in certain cold medicin, I am not sure about the stuff you are using, but that certainly may explain the lack of sleep and energy.
Ya... I would stop using the adult stuff immediatly!! I have a feeling that the adult stuff you are using has that chemical in it that acts as caffeen, giving adults a little boost so they can get through the day, work, family stuff, ect. Its like giving him a cup of coffee or a soda with him taking that stuff. On a side note, thats why stuff like that is used to manufacture meth, the chemicals in the stuff produces an up feeling, energy in the body, but these guys manufacture it and make it super potent. Strong and dangerous stuff that keeps users on it up for days and they 'tweak' the street name for being super wired. I am going off tangent here as usuall... heh. I would stick with the benydril and adults should not take childrens meds because it wont work for them just as much as children should not take adult meds because its too strong and they may not react correctly to it. Well... at least he is feeling better, the stuff works, he just does not need that upper chemical, and its exactly the reason why when I am sick I dont take medicin at all unless it is at might, during the day i stay away from it because it makes me jittery, but at night, to sleep I like tylonol PM because it allows me to breath compfortably and also has sleep aid in it. I hope he feels better! Either the tylenol or something that is mixed with it~inactive ingredient?? Try motrin/ibuprofen which works much faster and longer than tylenol for fevers anyway:) Poor thing must be totally exhausted..hope he gets to feeling better soon:) Best of luck:) I have heard of allergies, especially the dyes. I would ask the pharmacist if there is something with the same active ingredient, but dye free. You could also try selecting adult Tylenol (the white ones that you CAN cut or crush – again, ask the pharmacist because some medicine should NOT be split or crushed) and crush it up and mix it with yogurt or jelly or something your ds will eat. I would check all the ingredients in the Tylenol and monitor ds’s behavior when he eats any of these in other products. If you see a pattern, it will be a pretty good indication of an allergy. The only thing I can suggest is also the dye or the differences in concentration of the tylenol. Depending on the type of tylenol the children's is slow release where it breaks down in the body over time where as some of the adult tylenol depending on which kind has a rapid release system which releases it into the blood stream quicker. I know benadryl does this to my kids. If they have to have it at all it makes them hyper and super wild. I also agree with what Shelly said I would alternate both tylenol and motrin every four hours until his fever comes down. Definetly give your pediatrician a call as well and tell him what is happening he might some other suggestions to triggers. Good luck. Thnks everyone Woodsman25- You have a good point, there very well may be caffine in the Tylenol since it is for adults. If there is I will feel really guilty for giving my child caffine and then expecting him o sleep lol The dyes in foods have never affected him, so I will entertain the idea from the rest of you guys posts and assume it is something in the inactive ingredients. I will certainly call the pharmicist today and figure out what the problem is. I am scared to ever give him Tylenol ever again, but next time I do I will try the childrens first and see what happens |
