Toe Walking and Hiking Boots?

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

Hi!

I took my 3 year old son for a pt evaluation and she mentioned trying hiking boots to stop toe walking. I was curious if anyone has heard of or tried this? Thanks in advance!Yes...I've heard that as well as swimming fins. Anything that makes them have to put their whole foot down (either sound, weight or whatever stimuli they are looking for)

My dd was a toe walker and we would "place a hand on her shoulders"  and gentle push down just a tad and state "Feet down" each and everytime she did this..all day long. Slowly fading the "hand on shoulders" to just a 2-finger tap with the same command~> "feet down"...over days this was reduced to just a touch on shoulders & just looking at her~she immediately went down off her toes.

Within 6 mos. I realized that she no longer walked on her toes whatsoever:) This took consistency but it worked. High top/hiking boots works well too but I would pair them with the demand "feet down" as well..they are bare footed alot!

Tap shoes worked well too and we did this as well...she loved to tap dance:)

Good luck!

Ohhh man, I got a nice pair of good EMS hiking boots I NEVER leave home without if camping or hiking, they are super compfortable and really the nices quality shoe I ever have owned up to date, probably most expencive also.

Ya, I was curious so I put them on, laced them up like I do any other time and tried it out. Ya, toe walking is almost impossible in them.

I did the toe walking thing a bit myself when I was a kid, and remember doing it after seeing someone walking in high heels, the sound it made was something I liked and probably got some odd looks from anyone around my school seeing me doing it . Heh... Shoes certainly dont prevent it, but hard bottomed boots certainly do.

My kids are proud beach bums  and they went bare-foot almost everywhere for the first few years, it really really helped, over sand, grass, everything... they were soon grounded.

Obviously if you live in a city and not next to a beach..hiking boots are a more acceptabe attire. It sounds like a v interesting idea.
