Local Day Trip Ideas

Have high gas prices influenced you to do things closer to home? If so, have you done things closer to home than you would have if gas prices weren't high.

Due to high gas prices I'm looking for ideas for local day trips to do with Quinn once he finishes his ESY program. It ends on July 31st. I'm saving up a little $$ so that we can do things in August.

We live in the Boston area. I'm interested in doing things that are 1 hr or less from home. Anyone in this area done things local to home, if so where have you gone and how was it.

Here are some of the local things we have done with ds...all are about 1/2 hour or less from where we live and are shorter in duration:

Visit to our local pond to go butterfly hunting.  We catch them, ID them and release them.

We took a walk along a creek to look for fish and bugs.

We walked across some bridges, as my son enjoys drawing them.

We went bird watching to look for baby birds.

All these are nature-oriented, but they were also close, short trips.

Hope this helps.
  • Mall has a mini golf thing & bungy jumping on trampolene thing she loves~NO shopping though..hates to do that. She loves to just walk around upstairs and downstairs..get a ice cream or ride the carousel..$1 buck:) We live like 3 minutes from a big mall here:)
  • Bookstores
  • Petstores
  • Library
  • Local aquatic center~$4 bucks for residents:)
  • Feeding the ducks at the park old bread/crackers...
  • Bug hunting in the backyard..turning over rocks, chunks of wood..
  • Backyard shower with the hose/sprinkers and baby shampoo and swimsuit:)
  • Dollar store~give them $5 bucks to get whatever they want:)

We are having a staycation this week...so far we have done the mall, petstore and toystore..tomorrow we are going to the Barnaby Bailey Circus:) Her first time..I hope she does well.

Wanted to do the aquarium and museum but she refused to go...really into playing her Wii she got for her birthday..it's a hoot!

Its not a driveway - its an adventure!  Get your camera ready, cause these make sweet photos years down the line.

Pull out the hose, bucket, and soap - wash the car...then the bikes or trikes.  Let em squirt ya!  Squirt them back!

Armour All the tires if you can trust the kids with that stuff.  Wipe down the interior with clean, damp cloths.  If their ears tolerate it, whip out those attachments to your vaccum that you NEVER use and make the kids suck up those nasty french fry fossils.

We also take recreational baths for no good reason when they are bored.  Pull out the beach and pool toys, play Jimmy Buffet on the bedroom CD player, make smoothies and let them sip them while in the tub.  So what if they spill a little?  Its a bathtub - you can rinse it out.

My boys LOOOOOOVE taking a bath, and are hungry as thieves when finished.

Already some great ideas!

I'll tell you Mason's new favorite thing this year is disc golfing...the frisbee disks are fairly cheap, about 10 dollars at Walmart and we have 2 courses nearby which are always free.  One goes through a really nice park with a creek, so he loves checking that out and it's a great way for him to burn energy!!

Enjoy the rest of your summer!!!!

Thank you both for the great ideas!

CAS'Mom those are great nature oriented ideas! We live near 2 ponds that used to have ducks up until 3 years ago. Unfortunatly the house and land on one of the ponds was sold and the duck barn was torn down and the new owners planted bushes to keep people away from part of the pond. We still have the ponds to enjoy!

Shelley~ I love your staycation ideas! They are great! We haven't been to the library in a long time . I hope you all enjoy the circus! Let us know how it goes!

Hiking

Picnic

Aquarium

Zoo

Treasure hunt

Go to a farm if there is one near you

Good luck and most of all, HAVE FUN
