yeast/bacteria question...

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with yeast and becteria getting worse after a round of anti fungal treatment?

A little background: My son had a Microbioal Panel done the beginning of April.  There were only two things that came back high Arabinose 98.25 (range 0-47)and HPHPA 602.90 (range 0-150).  He was treated with a month of Diflucan, Metronetozole (sp) and Nystatin. That was also around the time that we began phasing into the GF/CF diet.

Now he is pretty much GF/CF except for things that might be hidden in foods. He also finished his round of Anti fungal medications at the beginning of June and we tested 2 weeks later. We just got the results and now his arabinose rate has increased to 269.40(range 0-47) .  Two new things are high citramalic at 3.29 (range 0-2.0) and hippuric 610.38 (10-400) .  The only thing that decreased was his HPHPA to 312.98 (range 0-150).

We saw his DAN on Friday and he prescribed a new round of meds for a month and to keep him on the Dystatin.  He is afraid that we might be chasing the dog with him and he might need to have a scope to see what is going on. He has so many things going on that I don't want him scoped too.

I am really upset by this new turn of events. I was hoping that things would be getting better and not worse.

Thanks for listening.

The HPHPA is a marker for clostridia.  When that is elevated, you need a strong antibiotic to eliminate it.  When you are on a strong antibiotic, you need to be on an antifungal to keep the yeast count down as you are elimiating teh bad bacteria.  Until you can get rid of the clostridia, you are not going to have a balanced gut.  Getting rid of the bad bacteria should be teh primary focus because clostridia is a big problem in so many ASD kids.

Metronidazole is the generic for Flagly.  Flagyl is one of the treatment use for Clostridia.  It is an antibiotic that spares some of the good gut flora.  A more common antibiotic is Vancomyicin which completely wipes out every bacteria (good or bad) in the gut.  You need to ask your DAN doc about using that.  I had my daughter on Met. and it took several rounds the entire summer to get rid of it.  My son got clostridia earlier this year and we decided to go w/ vanco to get rid of it quickly.  We used it for two week and it was gone.

However, you need to also provide a strong gut support while they are on it.  Meaning you need to provide probiotics (given no soonder than 2 hrs after an antibiotic) for it will help heal the gut and do what it needs to do (ie break down and metabolize foods - fight yeast).

Other things to consider for yeast is reduce sugar and carb intake

Use digestive enzymes for they help break down the outer shell of the yeast.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Jenni
Our DAN did change his antibiotic to Vancomyicin and the antifungals of Ketoconazole and Dystatin.  Ds takes Probio Gold at dinner time. Do you think I should be giving him it more than once a day.  Also he takes Protease from Houston Labs with Breakfast and Dinner.
Thanks for the response.  We are waiting on the meds to be delivered so that we cans start. I hope this wipes this stuff out.  I want my good eater back.
Ds doesn't get  alot of sugar except in the fruits that he eats.  He loves the baby food fruits and the peach healhy harvest apple sauces from Motts.  He takes lots of his supplements with these.
Have a great weekend

The Probio Gold is okay, but you ought to consider rotating the probiotics so you can provide him with a variety of strains.  We use Probio GOld, but also use Klaire labs, Primal Defense, Threelac, etc.  You want to provide him with as many different strains of good bacteria as possible.  The Kirkman Supplement book has info on why you should rotate probiotic.  Let me see if I can find it for you.

Which one from Kirkmans - The Zyme Prime, AFP, No Phenol or the Trienza (sp)(which has all three)?  You want to give a digestive ennzyme that breaks down both carbs and protien.  I give my kids the AFP and the Zyme.  I will also give DigestRight or the Kirkman ones that has the DPPIV.

I answered this in your other post but I think now that his markers are down some, the Vancomycin will work to eliminate the Clostridia.

My girl had (has?) it, too. Her markers for it 2413.44! We just finished the Vanco (four weeks worth) and her behaviors are not too much better and she had diareah today.

We use the ProbioGold as well and give it first thing in the morning and again before bed. One capsule each time, though now I am giving two capsules for a few days to build back up the good stuff.

I also just bought Culterelle today and started it. One capsule. It was a few hours later that she had the diareah so I wondered if that was the cause. All I am reading says it doesn't have that side effect.

I will be very interested to see wht her levels are now. Likely not gone.
