SCD Diet

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

I finally broke down and started the specific carbohydrate diet with my son today.  So far so good I suppose.  His yeast levels are "quite significant" according to our DAN and I felt like we needed to do something a little more drastic to help get it under control.  We've been treating it with MCT liquid (caprylic acid), grapefruit seed extract and threelac in addition to another probiotic.  I was wondering if anyone else out there has had success with SCD.  It's probably one of the more difficult diets out there - so I guess I'm just looking for some sort of encouragement.  What if any results did you see and how did it take??

I know of a lady whose son is on the ketogenic diet but not SCD.  WE are GFCF with 4 children here.  The one with seizures we have considered going on SCD.  I hope it works well for you.  I'd like to know about the MCT and the GSE.  I have heard VERY good things about the threelac.

We tried SCD with our son for several months with good results. He had already been GFCFSFCF for 9 months before we switched to SCD and was doing well, but his BMs were still not right. After three months on SCD the problem resolved. He stayed on SCD for almost a year, but while we were living out of the country for several months we added rice back into his diet since we could not get some of the staple foods in his diet and he continued to do well with rice. I think that SCD was important for helping his gut to heal, but our son may not need it for the long term. Originally I planned to keep him on the SCD for two years before returning to GFCFSFCF, but he did well with the earlier transition.

For me, the hardest step was committing to stick to the SCD. I couldn't use preprepared foods, but the foods could be fairly simple. I think it's important to keep it as simple as possible, particularly at the beginning. If you stick with fruits, vegetables, and meats you should be OK. I purchased a cook book called the Gluten Free Gourmet that has been great. Many of the recipes have casein in them, so keep an eye out for them.

Have you checked out the website for kids on the SCD? www.pecanbread.com

Good luck!

Hello everyone.

My boys have been on gfcf diet for a few months now and I am considering moving on to SCD for them.  Any advice on how to start?  I need to know when to introduce things such as probiotics once on this diet, what snacks and desserts are allowed, etc.    Will rice milk still be allowed on SCD?

I am home all the time and cook almost exclusively from scratch, and I grow my own vegetables and we also have many fruit trees and shrubs on our properties so we are truly blessed with the fresh produce (or frozen from fresh for winter months)  We also buy organic meats from neighboring farmers.

They are both showing improvements on gfcf but I heard that SCD has even more dramatic shows of improvements in teens and older children (my boys are almost 22 and 12)

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Claire- My son is on the SCD.  It isn't easy to start but it will soon be as easy as GFCF.  I think it's even easier because it is so limited that you don't have to experiment with "strange" ingredients.  It's basically, meat, veggies, fruits, nuts and eggs.  If you don't already have it, you have to buy the "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" book to learn more about it.  Then, you should go to the pecanbread.com website for very good instructions on how to start the diet.  Rice milk is not allowed on the SCD; however, nut milk and coconut milk are allowed.  I make EVERYTHING from scratch too.  SCD works better if you follow the recommended stages; so some of the snacks that your kids might enjoy may be further into the diet.  However, even if you eliminate some of the "bad" foods, you should see results.  FYI- we did have a regression at the beginning of the diet but finally after almost 2 months, we started seeing major improvements.

There is also a yahoo group for the pecanbread.com website.  The people there are very insightful and helpful!!

Probiotics, I believe can be introduced after about a week on the diet but you'll want to start slowly.  A big part of the SCD is the homemade yogurt.  I have not started that with my son yet but I hear it is great for them.

For snacks, if you can mix it up from the main ingredients I listed above, then they can have it (given they aren't intolerant).  You can make them muffins, cookies, cakes, fruit, veggie chips, etc.  There are recipes out there that are helpful and those websites also provide recipes for the different stages into the diet.  My son eats pancakes, brownies, cookies, and dried fruits for snacks.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!!

Thank you so much, Joanna.

That website is awesome and I have reserved that book from our library.  I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with your story so far.  I'd love to keep getting updates from you if you have time to post them (I'm curious about the homemade yogurt - my boys love yogurt from the store but I've never made it from scratch)

Thanks again so much.
