Food/Supplement for Autistics?

Hi everyone!  I have a 5 yr old daughter who was diagnosed as autistic at age 2 ½ .  She had her OT and ST up to age 4 then stopped as recommended by her doctor who later told us that her problem is more of speech delay.  After the therapy, we sent her to a normal school and  observed that she has average learning skills except that she still can’t express her needs verbally.  Are there any herbal or food supplements that you can recommend to cure autism (or at least make her more functional)?

Amy the reason I KNOW that the suppliments are working for Matthew is that  a) he has had very very loose stools from the time he was 2,  as soon as we started him on the supp's he hasn't had a loose stool since except for the 2 days we went on vacation and I wasn't able to give him the supp's.  and  b) because also when I wasn't able to give him the supp's he had trouble sleeping at night and he didn't pay attention as much like he does since beginning the supp's.

Like you I had wondered how we would know if it was the suppliments or just him progressing as he would anyway.  But after seeing what a difference it was without the supp's now I will be sure to take them with us when we go anywhere.

bonnie and ruth which one of the SuperNuThera do you get there are so many of them and which flavor. My mason is 3.5 adn 44 lbs hard to give him med. he would have to have the liquid i guess. any advise is appreciated. i will try anything to help him more.

I'm still trying to decide on supplementing.  We tried cod liver oil (coromega) and multivitamins to no avail because my dd has a 6th sense about vitamins hidden in her food and will NOT take them!

I've been going back and forth on the Super - nu - thera.  Most of you say there is benefit from it, but I still have to wonder.....would the kids be improving/progressing regardless due to other factors like therapy, maturity, etc.  We started thinking about it a month ago but have yet to try it b/c we know it's going to involve a lot of effort just to get her to take it.  During that month she has started using 3 signs....something she has never done before!!!  She has also started "kissing" and her eye contact has improved.  Now,  if we had started her on SNT a month ago, we would have credited the supplement.  Same thing with the GFCF diet we started 8 months ago and then quit later b/c it didn't seem to affect her.  She has made VAST improvements with behavior/stimming/eye contact during that time and we would always have thought "it must be this diet."

Our doc (who has seen MANY autistic children over the years and works with the Marcus Institute) tells us that, in general, he sees no difference in progress between children on the diets/supplements than children that are not - but so many parents are willing to try anything b/c we're so desperate for something to work.  I personally think a lot of it is marketing, just like you get when docs push certain meds that the drug reps market.  Just like anyting else, sometimes it just comes down to the $$$!

As much as we wish there was, there is no cure for autism as of yet.  Multiple modalities and therapies are truly the best ways to make progress IMHO!

***Still trying to decide on the SNT, though, feel free to give me your opinions, guys!

Ruth, Thanks for the input - I'm still trying to make up my mind so I really apprectiate other people's experiences/perspectives.  I can totally understand why you would try the supps if there were physical indications that something was wrong.  Question:  Do you think I should still try the supps even if there are no physical symptoms w/ Ansley?  She has never had loose stools, gastrointestinal problems, reflux, skin rashes, frequent ear infections, nothing.  She is extremely healthy, physically.  Maybe it's worth a try just to see if there's any change in attention, engaging, etc.  I just don't know....I'm sort of afraid to mess up a good thing when it comes to her physical health and diet - ya know what I mean?

 Thanks again for your advice!

Amy in my opinion (of course I'm not a dr so ignore me if you like) I don't see how the vitamins could hurt.  I mean afterall dr's are always telling us to take vitamins.  These kirkman vitamins are just regular vitamins mixed in a liquid form to make it easier on our little ones to take it.  They aren't anything that is different from a childs mult-vitamin that you might buy in the store such as walmart.  The only reason I don't buy Matthews at the store is that a) he refuses to take pills so the liquid is better. and b) the kirkman labs vitamins keeps out all the artificial stuff.

Ruth

Cyndie,  Matthew is on the multi-vitamin liquid WITHOUT A & D because he also takes cod liver oil and he gets his A & D with that.  As for getting him to take his vitamins, I had a hard time too until I read somewhere that if you mix it with a little bit of a citrus juice (such as apple) it is easier to get them to take it as they don't seem to be able to taste the vitamins as much that way.  This worked great for Matthew, he never gives me a problem anymore with it.

Hope this helps,

Ruth

What Ruth said. Even though supplements can help our children, they still need the therepies as well.

We also use SuperNuThera. Jaden's eye contact has been about 40 percent improved with it, and so has her learning skills. She said three new words between yesterday and today! \0/

You can find SNT at Kirkman labs

Ok I figure some people on here will get very upset with my reply on this.  Most people (dr's, scientists, and parents) believe that there is NO CURE for autism.  And for the most part I agree with that assessment.  However, I do argue that sometimes....sometimes there is something missing or in some cases too much of something in our kids that make them behave in an autistic like manner.  For the past 2 months I have been giving my son a multi-vitamin from kirkman labs called super-nu-thera and cod-liver oil.  My son is still very much autistic but something is definetely different.  He is paying attention more, he seems to understand just a little better, and he sleeps better.  So although it hasn't "cured" him and maybe (probably) never will, it has however made a significant difference.

Now saying all of that I have to tell you that I think it is vital for you to get your daughter back in speech therapy.  I cannot believe that a doctor would tell you to stop therapy when it is obvious your child needs it.

Hope this helps

My daughter has suspected aspergers, she is 8.  I use a homeopathy, (still new at it though), to cure some of the symptoms---we use pulsatilla, I also give her a multi vitamin daily & Omega 3 (liquid form) & magnesium (powder form) from the health food stores.........SOmetimes I think it is working & then there are days I believe it isn't working.......Just my 2 cents.........Amy,

We, too, see a big difference with Luke while he's on the supplements.  When we were away on vacation and he didn't take them, there was a noticable regression in him, particularly in his sociability and his vocality/trying new words.  My husband is a skeptic by nature (not to mention an analytical chemist; read: he analyzes everything before he takes the plunge into something!)and even he's convinced that the supplements have made a huge difference in Luke's abilities.  We're going to continue them thru the foreseeable future.

We use the liquid Lemon-Lime flavor. The flavor is concentrated but Jaden likes it so much she 'asks' for it
