Broken arm

Hi,My son is doing great,I am still scared to send him to school tomorrow but I talked to the principle on Fri and she assured me he will be safe.

Peridot8003,Its called a Shoulder Immobilizer, It had to be altered to fit a child ,but a good Med supply place should do this for you,It was only 40 dollars for the brace and alterations. If you want i can post a photo of it ,If you think it will help.(PM me if you want.)

Linda

ouch.  There is no reason to feel guilty. The professional didn't catch, why should you have been expected to?

Linda,

You did what you thought you should.  Don't feel Guilty, no one knew it was broken.  I hope he is feeling better now.  Best wishes!

My oldest got a fracture in her right arm with no red, swelling....we thought nothing of it..she just fell from a trapeze swing in backyard swing..we had her in a cast by midnight. It looked perfectly fine? We spoiled her rotten and and being the only grandchild at the time she was eating it up:)

Hope he heals soon:)

Hi all ,my ds broke his arm on Tuesday, unfortunately we only found out yesterday,he even went to school on wed,I feel so bad and guilty.

he fell off a snowbank in front of our house ,and wouldn't drive his bike ,I took him to emerg,The dr there did spend time with him and asked him lots of Questions,he took a good look at his arm and said ,Its not swollen hot or red in any way,he may have pulled a muscle.we will not Xray him but just wait and see.

Sounded ok to me ,I did tell him about ds Under reacting to pain ,and he almost changed his mind, well he went to school on Wed,his Aid sent a note home saying ,he wasn't himself, and we should get him rechecked,we went to our Fam doc yesterday and he sent him for x rays saying he may have a green stick fracture.

Well he broke the bone right under his shoulder,(cant cast)now he is in a sling for 4-6 weeks ,with a foam band around his chest and arm to hold it in place,I need to worry for the next few weeks about him falling ,or being banged in to.

I need to call the school this morning to see if they think they can keep him safe at school,If not they will need to have someone to come here,Oh and the Insurance company tolled us we may need to move out for up to three weeks so they can fix some water damage to the bedrooms.

Sorry for the RANT,

Linda

owie!! poor boy.. if it makes you feel any better we think a family friend's son broke his nose once but he too underreacts to pain, so he never mentioned it.. I have a friend who was just in the contraption that you mentioned and he said it wasn't too bad! I'm sure you'll have your hands full though, so good luck!!!!!! Let us know what the school says! Oh no! You are having a rough week! *many hugs* It's not your fault that it wasn't caught at the DR.'s office, after all, if the Dr. didn't know there's no reason you should have been expected to!

A doctor once missed that I broke my foot in FIVE places (straight across my foot from left to right on the four toe bones, and then cracked a bone the other way, in the direction of toe to heel.) So don't feel bad! It happens! ohhh no thats terrible, I am sooo sorry to hear that and I am glad it at least did not bother him terribly.

I broke my wrist in collage, not fun, and because of where the fracture was they had to immobilize my entire arm, I could no longer go mountain climbing, hike, or even write, I typed everything and took notes with my left hand, and tho its not cool at first your son will have to compinsate and use his other hand (assuming he broke his good arm) so at least that will get stronger.

Then when he gets better (and its important for blooodflow to go to the fracture so it can heal proporly and that he wont require a cast for a longer time) but his arm will be terribly weak for a bit, I recomend tiny dumbells, the ones used for jogging, something small to lift and a squeeze ball to get his hand and arm back up to strength.

I hope you all pull thru, its not fun, and you have to garbage bag that arm for showers.

Thanks all,He is doing well now and slept well last night .

The sling and foam they put on him yesterday, in the ER, did nothing to Immobilize his arm.

I caught him using the hand on the broken side 3 times this morning,so after lunch,we took him to the local Medical supply store and the lady there fitted him with a immobilizing sling ,he and I both feel better, and i will feel safer sending him to school on Monday.

Linda

Don't feel bad, you even took him to the Dr.!! My son has broken his arm every year for the past 4 years. The first time he broke it falling off a coffee table! This was a wednesday evening and I put a boo boo bunny on it and said "see it's better". I sent him to school the next day and talked to my parents on the phone that night. They shamed me into taking him in the day after that! Yep..buckle fracture. Now, whenever he falls I take him in immediately. I think that you did everything right! I do agree that it is worrisome that they can't cast, but little guys heal up really fast  and I will be praying for a fast recovery!

aloha, Renee

Poor baby, and poor you!

I broke my hand when I was about 12 and I told my mom how bad it hurt.  She said "its not broken if it was you wouldn't be able to move it".  Well it was swollen and all different colors by the next day and we went and had it X-rayed.  Sure enough it was broken and I got a cast.  I couldn't have been happier.  I got a cool cast and the right to forever remind my mother how wrong she was.

You did everything that could have been done.  Don't feel guilty!  Just spoil your little guy rotten for a couple of days!

I hope your son has a very smooth recovery.

My daughter broke her arm in the same place yesterday. The er put her in a sling and secured her arm to her side with an ace bandage. I have to check into the sling you got from the medical store, I didn't even know one existed! Hope your little one feels better!!!Wishing your ds a speedy recovery!

Hey, how's the little snow bank jumper doing?  There is nothing worse than seeing your child in pain, and y'all have a long row to hoe with him wearing that thing.

Please let us know how he's doing!  Smooch for mommy's courage!

jeeze... I just hope that the stuff on his arm is not to tight, if blood flow is resticted in ANY way it wont heal fast enough. When I got hurt and got a cast I was in for 6 weeks, and of course because I was messin with the cast, primarily using a coat hanger to scratch my extremly itchy arm, it was torture really, that itching that you cant scratch.   I felt like some of the cotton actually ripped inside over time, it wore out because this somewhat sharp metal wire was going in and out all the time, I even remember bringing it to class with me because if I started to itch I would not think of anything else other then the itching. This cotton got worse inside overtime and I think it was just enough to where some of it would clump up and restrict blood flow just slightly. So after my 6 weeks the cast came off and I had an X-ray done, it was determined that the bone did not heal all the way and so I received a smaller cast that did not immobilize all the way to the bottom of my shoulder but unstead the bottom of my elbow and got it for another 4 weeks, so I could not use my arm for 10 weeks!!! That was terrible!!

I hope that does not happen to your son!! I really think and I understand they dont recommend sticking stuff in the cast to itch, but that can drive ya crazy, its all I thought about, and I think the medical people should figure out a way to combat that cause that can be untolerable. After a few days I just did not care anylonger, it made me miserable until I did something about it.Woodsman..I got smart over the years (my son also gave me lots of practice). Baby powder down the cast help with the itching as does a blow dryer set on cool setting. You just aim it down the cast opening  closest to the itchy spot.I'm sorry to hear this. I hope his arm heals up soon!

Hi all ,My ds went to the Ortho dr yesterday ,he says he is healing fine, and will see him in three weeks ,Then if all is well he can take off the brace.

OMG where were you in 2004. I broke my wrist but my entire arm was in a cast co I could not turn it, even moving the elbow would be bad and at first I didnt understand why until I really looked at my arm afterwards and thought what it would be like to have a broken wrist and try to move my elbow, it twists your wrist.

OHHHH man I wish I woulda knew that back then. I used a coat hanger, and even tho I knew I should not have, it did the trick, but I like your way MUCH better!!!! Good to know thanks.

Hope hes feelin even better today and handeling the change ok!!! I feel for him!

Here's wishing him a speedy recovery, and a low-stress solution to the water damage problem.
