Help...DD won’t take supplements!

Well, I am thinking I would just force her. I know all families are different and forcing your daughter might cause much more stress than forcing mine. But I think the supplemetns are like medicine. If she needed meds, you would have to give them somehow. I wonder how others have dealt with it?

Okay, I've looked back over old posts at all the advice for getting kids to take supplements.  Over the past few weeks I've tried every trick in the book and Ansley STILL won't take them!!!  I really want her to get B6 and Omega-3, but no matter what form it comes in or how I try to disguise it she simply refuses.  If I occasionally do find a way to get her to take them, it only works once and then she refuses to eat the same thing again.

I'm at wits end here!  Somehow she just "knows" that there is a supplement hidden in something (even when I can't taste it at all!)  Maybe she has supersensory smell or taste.

Also, she's always been such a good eater and now she's getting so suspicious that I'm afraid I might be turning her off to food or trying new foods.  Any suggestions?  Please help!

Thanks for your input, Bon, but my dd is VERY difficult.  The last time we tried forcing something was when she was on amoxycillan (bubble gum flavor, you'd think she would tolerate that).  The first time I "forced" her to take it I was able to get it down even though she fought me and kicked and bit me.  The next time though, she figured out how not to swallow and when I tried to make her swallow she inhaled the medicine into her lungs!  She almost choked to death and then threw up all over.  It was so traumatic and horrible for both of us......I felt just awful.  She almost "drowned" on her medicine!  I just know I can't take that chance again.   I just don't know what to do now. Amy that's a hard one, I sympathize. She must be psychic or something, because the B-6 we put into Jake's milk has no taste or smell that we can distinguish!  What about baking them into cake or something? (I'm not sure if the heat neutralizes the vitamins, though, you should check that first).  The only other thing I can think of is shots, but that would probably be even worse!

My daughter also seems psychic when it comes to medicine and supplements. I have gone so far as telling people she is allergic to amoxycillin because I can't get it out of the carpets.  I have tried 2 things that have helped a little and she hasn't caught on after 2 weeks. She feels that the juice boxes can't be tampered with..so I empty a little out and then put the supplements in the juice box. I also add it to something really strong tasting like maple syrup on waffles.  You might have to do really small doses through out the day because it is hard to hide more than 1/4-1/2 tsp.  When Katie was Ansley's age (we didn't do supplements because we didn't know better, but I used to hide everything in Chocolate pudding). This phase lasted about a year. Now I couldn't get her to eat chocolate pudding if my life depended on it.  You might try calling Kirkland labs..I haven't done it, but I have heard that they are very helpful and might have information if heat deactivates the vitamin or other ideas.

Good luck, Renee

I am sorry, Amy. I didn't realize she was so fiesty!  I didn't mean to make it seem simplistic. I am still thinkign in terms of NT children

My son, Zackary is the SAME way.  We will ultimately RUIN foods for him if we try to hide things in his accepted choices....for months on end.  So what we have found is the ONLY way to do these things is to tread slowly.  If it is something like an antibiotic...we have to do shots, because obviously you need it to work and quickly.  But supplements, we start out with like 1/10 of the suggested dose...even lower if necessary.  Like super nu thera....we were at like 1/15 of a dose at first in his OJ...then waited what seemed like an eternity of 2 days - we added more.  It seemed like forever...and we are still only at a half dose per 8 ounce cup...but he doesn't throw it down anymore and refuse to drink it :) :) ;)  Amy,
We had the same exact experience with amoxycillin -- Luke inhaled it into his lungs and almost drowned from it.   He kicks and squirms and screams whenever we try to force him to take anything.  It's now a 2-person job be/c Luke is such a strong little fella!

Are you using pills or liquid for the supplements?  Luke drinks a nasty-tasting super-nuthera, but we disguise it in cranberry-raspberry juice, diluted with water.  We can only give him maybe 1/4 tsp at a time be/c otherwise the SNT overwhelms the flavor.  Can you try breaking down the dosage into very small amounts and giving it throughout the day??

For a while, Luke distrusted us, too, and he'd only drink something if we promised him that there was nothing in it.  Receptive delays, my butt!

We've tried crushing up B6 pills and also the "Child Bright" gummies.  I've also been trying to give her Omega-3 using the "Coromega" brand b/c it tastes better (kind of like an orange push pop) so you don't get the fishy flavor or "fish burps."  So far, obviously, none of this is working.

The only reason I had not tried SNT is b/c I heard that it had a large amt. of copper which I was a little leary about.  Today, however, I found out from Kirkman that they no longer have the large amounts of copper b/c of parent complaints.  I guess I'll go ahead and try the SNT then and I'll just give her plenty of eggs for the Omega-3!  I think you have to be careful mixing Omega-3 supplements with the SNT if you use the kind with Vitamins A and D.  It's important not to get too much of those.  So, I'll just try to supplement the Omega-3 naturally.

Now, I have to decide what flavor!!  I may try the lemon-lime marguerita mix trick, maybe she'll drink that b/c she won't know what it's supposed to taste like.....maybe is the key word here!!!

What flavor of SNT have you guys found is easiest to disguise?

My son was the same way until we found that B6 /magniesium oxide can be compounded into suspension form and heavily flavored in the flavor of your choice (bubble gum, chocolate, rasberry, cherry ect). It has to be done at a Compounding Pharmacy and you need a doctor script for it but it is VERY worth it. They can make up a three month supply so you don't have to go back every month. My son now grabs the suringe, puts it in his mouth, and takes it by himself!!!

Powder form B6 and some of the tablets are very bitter tasteing and to some children it even has an odor.  Hope this helps!!

Amy,

We use lemon/lime super nu thera and I mix it in cranberry juice with seltzer (for fizz). We are/were a no juice house (I know I am mean) but I have made the exception to get the vits. down. He gets two cranberry/seltzer cocktails a day (one with super nu thera and one with the Nordic Naturals Berry Keen) and is so thrilled to get "juice" he will suck it down. If I am desperate, I will use OJ but he typically won't drink all of it down (and doesn't get all of the vits.).

Good Luck...
