Yeah, NY is the place to be. Told you Tzoya would come through. Never even knew we were the only state that had ed. regulations specific to autism. I often read these boards and wonder why people are having such a hard time with schools. Now I know.Anyway, re Top 10 - Someone else posted who wanted to know list. I had it printed out but couldn't find it for her. I had originally found it on a site called Autism Key, but haven't checked the site recently. I know Wisconsin was #1, New Jersey and California also on list, along with Ohio which you mentioned. If I do find my list, I will post. Where in NY to move - first, don't discount the City, there is so much to offer and not as "scary" as one might think (bad publicity). I'm not talking about Manhattan, too much of an adjustment coming from NC - but the Boroughs. It has always been my dream to move to Rockland County. So beautiful!! Within commuting distance to City, NJ. Rockland has everything all benefits of city, but in the country. Most beautiful houses I've ever seen. History mixed with modern. Problem is since it is such a desirable location,it is getting populated and can be expensive. Not as expensive as Westchester, but still up there. Rochester, Saratoga Springs too far to have any city benefits and COLD. Also think hard to get a job. As if you can't tell, I LOVE NY! I'd suggest you get in touch with The Advocacy Center http://www.advocacycenter.com/ They service upstate and are EXCELLENT. From what I understand, Medicaid services are more available upstate than they are on Long Island. The fact that we, on LI, cannot access Medicaid services (a decision of our local DDSO) makes things harder on us. But I've heard that all the rest of the local county DDSO's in NY have a different attitude. Also, taxes and housing is FAR cheaper upstate. Far more snow, too, but not everyone hates snow as much as I do. Good luck. Is there anyone out there that lives or is around the (Utica/Little Falls NY) Like what was mentioned we have family there and my husband is the only one at the time time is able to bring in an income. My husband and myself know what it is like to deal with (worse than hard times). Please the mother of three (one autistic) and possilbe his younger sister. Do we to move to NY or is there another state that would have some of the same coverages. Thanks Jbennet Hi. Just wanted to let you know that I noticed. There are folks from NY here and you should get some good answers. Welcome to the board. Thanks for the info. We are very seriously thinking about this and just want to know what we are getting into before moving. Right now the biggest question is where in New York to move to. Not much on the city and have read some about Rockland county, Rochester, and Saratoga Springs, but would like some opinion from the locals. My husband does have family in the Utica area (cousins), but hasn't seen them in years. What kind of funding is in New York? Have read somewhere that insurance is provided, is that true? Right now our son Trae is in the public school pre-k and gets 1.5 hrs ST and 1 hr OT a week and thats all. What aren't the benefits of living in New York!! I wouldn't even know where to begin. I've lived in & spent time in other states and keep returning home. Job market is very strong right now. Crime rate is way lower than many other states and especially compared to other major cities. It is comparably expensive, but, as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for". For autism - it is our Senator who was instrumental in passing through the largest amt. of federal funding, so we are an autism friendly state. We are not on the Top 10 list for best states for autism svcs, however. Educationally, the only negative thing I can say is Private school waiting lists are unbearably long. I have had some trouble with Public Schools, but we seem to be an exception to the rule. For anything at all related to autism education, contact (PM if want) TZOYA, she is moderator of Board and Special Ed advocate - from NY. Actually, job wise it would depend on what line of work husband is in. We do have the Four Seasons, though - and that is the reason I keep thinking of maybe moving to CA - I can't stand cold weather or changing of seasons. And, we have Woodsman!! Good Luck in your decision. P.S. - Have a good friend who moved to NC 2 yrs ago and is dying to come back (problems selling house though). My husband and I live in NC and have been told that we can not receive anything at alll because of how much he makes. Our son is autistic and possilble his younger sister. We are wanting to make the best move to benefit our children as well schools and work. We really need some imformation please because we are at a stand still on moving, shcool's and work PLEASE IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE THAT COULD HELP IT WILL BE APPRECAITED! Thank you so much and hopefully with everyone out there we can get some advise because as of APRIL we will need/be moving. Thanks JBENNET&nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; &nbs p; I was born and raised on Long Island,,, As a kid I loved it, but knew that I wouldn't spend the rest of my life there,,, After my daughter was born we moved to PA (great services as well-depending on where you live),, LI just became to congested for us. we wanted a slower way of life,,,, a personal choice,,,, I have heard good things about NY. I have also heard that Albany offers good services- I would check out the university,,, I think I read that they run a special program there for autism. I have seen some really nice areas around the Albany area. I guess you just have to take an inventory of what kind of lifestyle fits you & the family best and where the best services are,,, Good luckHello. I live in Vermont but am from NY State originally. I have lived in VT for 6 yrs due to my husband's job. And, yes, it's boring, but I blend in quite well as most of the tourists are from NY and NJ. First off- I love Rockland and Westchester counties as well. It is extremely expensive in those areas. You pay for that luxury living near NY City. They typically have pretty good schools, and yes, you are very close to NY City, but if you check on Realtor.com, you will find it expensive, and as you go upstate in to Dutchess and Ulster Counties, it's a little cheaper- generally, the more upstate you go- the cheaper it will get. One is not a HICK if they live in those areas, either. But- second- Saratoga Springs is awesome too. There is much more to NY State than just NYC. NYC is great, and I have many relatives there- but there is much to do in other parts of the state. And, while I know Saratoga is cold, and Rochester is much colder- that is 4 or 5 months of the yr, and many people like the change of seasons. I have lived in Westchester, as well as the Capital District/Albany NY area. You have alot of lake effect snow in Rochester/Syracuse/Buffalo areas. Utica CITY- meaning the City of Utica has NOT the most desirable schools. NEW HARTFORD- right outside the city of Utica- is GREAT- and has great schools. I know this as my brother and wife live in Utica and his wife is from Utica/Rome area. I have looked as well in different parts of NY State. The site www.greatschools.net is a great site for many things. Obviously, knowing if the Sped is good is another thing to look at that you have to find other parents to chat with regarding the Sped. Ny State is a very large state. It has much to offer! I hope to get back there myself one day!
One more benefit of moving to NY- is you can be a YANKEE FAN and not have all the RED SOX fans booing you all the time like up here in VT!I moved to MD from Utica area...at that time we had 2 typical kids. I have not myself needed the services, but I am aware of some things out there and perhaps potential people to contact. There is now the Kelberman Center which is housed in UCP. The parents of a child opened this center and they have lots of services there. It would certainly be a great place to contact to ask questions specific to the area. I would say you would be better in Oneida County than Herkimer COunty. Good luck! Gail B, And, how can you forget The Giants!! Are they now called the NJ Giants? My niece and nephew are in Rome!! Around Christmas time they told me an unbelievable amount of snow, even for Utica (don't remember how many inches they said), had to shovel their way out of front door. There is the casinos up there - tons of casino jobs - but not sure what type of work dh looking for. (how's your doggie lol!) Ny Giants..... They play at the Meadowlands in NJ. Rome NY has ok schools too. New Hartford NY is right outside of Utica NY, and New Hartford High School was on a top 100 list about a yr or two. The prices of homes are much cheaper in Central NY. And, yes...the snow....and right now...i hate the snow, ice, and rain...we are heading to Fl on Feb 14 for a week.....I need warmth! Gail NY is wonderful! And it does not have to be expensive if you live in my area, Upstate!Wow, Go NY! I can definitely say DO NOT CONSIDER NEW MEXICO. I'm lurking through the posts here to determine if there is a place I can relocate to for services. My boy is 16. I've gone through due process twice - the last case is ongoing and am part of a class action lawsuit against the largest school district in the state on behalf of all students with autism. It's awful here as far as services in school or out of school go. I want to move but... the cases are ongoing and if I leave they stop and the last 12 years of fighting will be for naught. I'd take snow if it meant services! Unfortunately I am a single parent who can not work outside of the home due to lack of school services and nonexistent DDwaiver services - and to think it took us 12 years to get off the wait list and allocated for services. Gads, financial ruin... Does anyone have experience with a good school system for the older kids? I know that here in NM, my son has been the "guinea pig" for about every professional venue from the "autism experts" to the legal system. Preschool and elementary are easy as this is where the focus is for research is but once our kiddo's get older, the systems here have no experience. Most parents are either really lucky because their kids can get through without major behaviors developing or choose to homeschool to avoid the problems or ship their children out of state to a residential school that specializes in autism.
Bev Its funny I just stumbled upon this site tonight, looking for info on schools for autism. I actually just moved out of NY last week. From Saratoga Springs to be exact. I hate NY. I have lived in many states, I left to move back to Michigan where I have lived in the past. Ann arbor has one of the best school districts. I suppose if your going to move to NY Saratoga is the place to choose, however it is not cheap. I know the job market in MI is not great right now but that really only applies to people whom don't have a degree or a useful trade. I will admit I didn't read through all of the posts and I will be completely honest that I LOVED the school my son attended ( he is 3) New meadows in malta NY. I just wanted to live in a more family friendly environment that I wasn't working non stop to pay for. I would do some more research on different areas. Good Luck in whatever you choose. |
