Riddle Me THIS....OK. what do you call a 4.9 year old assessed at a 2.5-3 year old level, with OCD tendancies, and S.I., speach delays, echolalia, and severe aggression issues? well, apparently, the neurologist says it is NOT CLASSIC AUTISM. i know that, that's why they called him HFA 4 months ago...duh! WTF? i guess its not a zebra, just b/c it is a short black and white striped horse either...... i feel like i am back at sqare one with a dx, BUT his ssi came in yesterday, his medicaid, came in yesterday, and dr today ordered intenssive ST & OT on top of what keith gets on his iep. so.....4 steps ahead, 1 step back? that's pretty good, right? what do you think? kate gee....anybody? aren't WE th experts?
Kate, I dont know if it will make you feel better or not, but the Ped Neuro did more or less the same thing with us last year. DS was dx at 34 months, by a team headed by a Developmental / behavioral Ped. They did the eval and the tests (I cant remember all the names, I know Vineland was one) and he was dx with infantile or classic autism with severe sensory issues and cognitive delay. Last year, when DS was 3 we went to the Ped Neuro and he said he didnt have a diagnosis and referred DS to a Psych for behavioral managment. AFTER he ordered tests that he had no idea who would help me get them performed. Well, we had the eeg, one of the worst times in my life (Why do medical folks not know that 3 year old Autistic kids can not follow complex directions? We went for the MRI and DS was ill, the PEd there sent us to our Ped where DS was dx witha virus. In the mean time we were sent to a new Ped Neuro who had the bedside manner of...well, lets not go there, he and I did not get along at all!!!!!! So I have put the MRIon hold, I have put the chromosome testing on hold (he didnt know anything about the numbing creme to decrease the pain during the blood draw, nor did he know if the lab was equiped to help me secure my child during the procedure. ABout the only thing he knew was he didnt have a firm diagnosis and they figured out how to bill the HMO 350 dollars for about 5 useless minutes, where my son was not even touched, spoken to or in any other way assessed. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR that makes me feel lots better. at least i know i am not alone...but it is still autism, how ever you slice it, right? IDK, so frustrated! he sure did jump on getting the therapies when i told him that the medicaid came through! i don't care... whateve it takes, i still say that's why they call it PRACTICING MEDICINE kate
