Tried no dairy,FRUSTRATED

My 11 year old has always been a picky eater, I'm talking no veggies, no fruit. I finally got fed up and thought I would start the GF/CF diet with CF being taken out first.  He tends to have this annoying clearing cough everytime he has cheese, or ice cream. On about the fifth day I couldn't take his tantruming about me "starving" him or treating him like a guinea. The next day I packed him a regualr lunch with some dairy in it and he had cheese in his breadfast. It has been two days now with just a regular diet and he had a horrible headache the last two days and a stomache last night. Does anyone think maybe I was on the right track cutting out the dairy and these are some symptoms of dairy being reintroduced? My husband thinks I'm overreacting and that we should wait to put him on this diet after we go to our first DAN! DR. appt, but that's not until April. I definitely agree with your husband.  The diet can be tricky and it really is best to do it under doctors supervision.  April is only a few months away.

My son is also 11.  We tried the diet in Oct. (2007) and took him off it 7 weeks later.  Not for him.  Many reasons.

There is an adjustment period both when you start diet and when you go back to regular food/drink.  Did you ever try lactose free milk?  It works wonders for us, even though my son is not lactose intolerant.

Good luck.  I strongly suggest Dr., however many parents here have done diet without doctor (most of these children are young - don't know if that makes a difference?)
Notime39458.8066898148I think he is having a reaction with the dairy being reintroduced.  When you first cut out dairy, especially if they consume a lot of it, the child will actually go through withdrawls because they crave it like an addict.  The most important thing to cut out is the milk.  If you can do that, then you can gradually start eliminating the other stuff and finding replacements.  It has go to be hard on him because he is 11 yrs old and so use to the foods he has consumed.

The rule for dairy is 3 weeks. Thats about how long it takes for it to be totally removed from the system and for the body to go thru its "withdrawls". For the first week of casein free my son was a terror and we caved and gave him cheese and it was horrible. I know its tough but by about the 2 and a half week mark we noticed a big change. It takes time and like it or not any child deprived of something they crave is going to complain. My son who never asked for cheese before was asking for cheese non-stop and for the life of me I couldn't remember a time when he had actually had it but they know. Its like a drug, once you take it away they will crave it and some will sneak it. We removed it from the house completely so that even if he opened the fridge(which he did) it wasn't there.  The dairy is the easiest(believe it or not) because it doesn't take as long to get out of the system. Gluten on the other hand can take as long as 3 months or longer depending on the child.
