Play resources

Here's my growing collection of play resources.  If a link doesn't work, try removing any blank spaces from the address.  If it still doesn't work, let me know.

Useful websites:

http://www.autismteachingtools.com/page/bbbbfg/bbbbtj - Here's a helpful easy to read article about play and autism.  It is based on the Westby Play Scale, and shows the various stages of play that children normally go through by age 5.

http://melindasmith.home.mindspring.com/ - Play drills and goals, plus tips about play dates and play groups.  From Melinda J. Smith, MD, author of "Teaching Playskills to Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder."

http://www.wolfberg.com/ - Center for Integrated Play Groups, with info and advice for relations and play with typical peers.

http://autistic-child-parenting.suite101.com/article.cfm/tea ching_pretend_play_to_children_with_autism  -Using play sets to develop play skills (ie sets with a building and related figurines.  Characters from tv are extra interesting).

Checklists:

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/asdfourt h.pdf - "Play Checklist" from Durham District School Board.  This is a checklist for observing your child's play skills and habits.  It was written by a school, so some questions may be more appropriate for older kids.  Go to page 82 in your reader.

http://www.rfenc.org/NEWSITE/SLATE-Manual.doc - checklist for observing play-related social skills both at the basic level (such as parallel play and turn taking with 1 peer) and higher level (such as initiating and turn taking with more than 1 peer).

http://www.brookespublishing.com/steps/PlaySkillsChecklist.p df - Play Skills Checklist.

http://routledgeeducation.com/resources/download/autism.pdf - Observation profile, for observing behaviors in an Early Education setting.  Lots of questions about aspects of play behaviors.

http://www.usautism.org/PDF_files_newsletters/scheflen_sarah _newsletter.pdf- two checklists by Sarah Scheflen, who's behind the Teach2play dvds with Jenny McCarthy.  The first is in specialist language, the second is in parent language.  She calls it a "play ladder" because it shows the steps typical children go through in their play development.

Videos:

http://www.youtube.com/user/tahirihrose - lots of free online videos showing various autism games for teaching pointing, following directions, ABCs, etc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-aHvmXOa6c&NR=1 - summary of Jenny McCarthy's teach2play DVD, volume 1 (steps to basic play skills)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmqLuuwDwNs&feature=relat ed - summary of Jenny McCarthy's teach2play DVD, volume 2 (steps to core play skills)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2efl3VDRSbU&feature=relat ed - summary of Jenny McCarthy's teach2play DVD, volume 3 (steps to intermediate play).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhAQlmpGBRE - summary of Jenny McCarthy's teach2play DVD, volume 4 (steps to advanced play).

Any resources to add?

NorwayMom40029.2546180556I clicked on the first link for play stages - ummm wow. She doesn't really do hardly any of those things. Some of them, sort of, maybe.

I can't say she is 100% devoid of pretend play. I do remember one day that she put a remote control for a toy car to her ear and walked around like it was a phone. Other than that, I can't really think of seeing her do things that looked like pretending.

oops, meant to post that on another thread. sorry.

thanks norwaymom..nice sites

http://www.rfenc.org/NEWSITE/SLATE-Manual.doc   this is a great site..checklist in it  gives me great ideas for new iep in social interaction and conversation skill for my student next year..as now we are at the end of our school year and our summer vacation is in 2weeks time only

Thanks for the tip, teacher!  I've added those two stories to my sample social story collection.  Here's the link for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:

I'm bumping this since there were two topics about play today. Added this today, under checklists.  But it also talks about the benefits of video modelling.

http://www.usautism.org/PDF_files_newsletters/scheflen_sarah _newsletter.pdf- two checklists by Sarah Scheflen, who's behind the Teach2play dvds with Jenny McCarthy.  The first is in specialist language, the second is in parent language.  She calls it a "play ladder" because it shows the steps typical children go through in their play development.
