Which therapy for very high functionning?Hi Everybody,I wish everybody happy holidays and good luck for everything. My son is 33 months and started a school a week ago where there is a day care with normally developping children where they are supposed to spend only a little time everyday and after a week he spent the complete two hours and his teacher just told me that he doesn't need ABA therapy. He still receive special instruction at home and the teacher said that he needs only speech therapy at the school. So What should we do, Is the day care enough knowing that his problem is more social-emotion? He knows a lot and even if the english is not his forst language he understand a little bit and collaborates very much. Sometimes i wonder if they gave a right diagnosis when i see all hecan do! He has few stereotypes and some special interest and mostly cannot control his emotions. Is there any other therapy for these kind of children? I am so afraid that he is not in the right school. We live in NY and the school he is on is public but it is difficult to get in apparently! Thank you Ok, why is the teacher telling you what he needs and does not need?? Does not matter if he is High-functioning or Low-functioning he has a Dx for a reason. Most of these childrens services are supposed to be at their natural enviroment , so if he is going to daycare all day everyday all of his services should go there. Do not hesitate to get him all of the services that he can possibly get NOW! don't ever second guess if he needs a certain type of service or if he does not, get everything you can see how it is working , you can always cancel things out. Does he have an IEP? What does that say? Please don't let the teacher run you or your son's schedule or plans! We started therapies at 1. Really it all depends on that childs needs. Are you all aware Linguia systems cells computer software our kids can do at home also with therapies. They also have board games also. To me Private is better cause of the 1:1 it gives. School usually are small groups. I read a case with a Asperger's man who was great with Math like our son who spoke several languages but yet English was very hard for him. Strange thing this man is name Daniel also. What is IEP? He started school only a week ago, the teacher said that they will set up goals with him instead of the program used in ABA therapy. That is why i am posting here, i know the other method teach that is all. I am just afraid for the future. The neurologist didn't give a DX but just said that he was showing signs, but the pediatrician specialized in devellopmental gave the DX Mild PDD-NOS. Alright, I also live in NY and spent from 5th grade on in NY public schools. First off welcome to the board. I think its great that many of these kids are in good normal schools, in normal classes, I did not have that luxary growing up unfortunately, but seriously wish that I had. If you ask me, the best theripy for HFA children is just to have a normal childhood, PERIOD! In my day nothing existed for me except special ed, which was horrible cause while I was the youngest kid in my class in 3-4th grade, I achived the highest marks, I could do the work far better then my peers, so I was seperate from the rest of the school yet board cause the older kids had to often catch up to me! I think your school is a very good school from what it sounds like, if speech is the only concern so be it, theripy for that, otherwise I feel HFA children get the best theripy by just going out and being normal, trial and error, you win some ya loose some, often more then NT kids its how your learn and develope. It is a hard road definatly, but itll prepair ya for the real world absolutly. Of course a few pointers, some help from mom and dad are great, and anyone else trusting in your sons life should help. My parents did many other things, I had a few teachers, but learned ALL social behavior on my own thru observation and just gettin practice all these years, I will admit I am a bit uneque, a character from what everyone at work would probably call me, but if someone were to know about my past their is no way they would beleive it. I think I do just fine in the real world now, and I know plenty of these kids will also.Thank you very much That is a written document for that child that staff must follow that list what the child needs are with accomidations and services needed. Goals also on there! You have to be there to add your ideas. Never sign what you don't think will not work. I did and then 4 years later he's still at same level. Also now there is all day Se and pullouts for certain subjects only. 50/50 is also a option also. All day is for lower kids though mostly. There is good/bad in it all. Most hfa are mainstreamed now though with some pullouts if needed. We done both but the 50/50 which means all basic with Se teacher except with SS/Science. The good about the all day Se is he learned how to sign/pecs. The down side is he was doing only grade level math. The rest was Prek-3. 4-6 is what he needs to improve on. The problem for our son is poor comprehension for him grade level 2. He will tell staff I don't get it, they say what about it you don't get. Some kids 1:1 is best. yes, he understands a lot even in english and speak french with us even if he is delayed a little bit. brcause he is only 33 months the school is only 2 hours plus two hours at home wiyh a special instructor and two hours of speech per week. He will get OT AS WELL. Another thing is kids can finagle reading tests also everyone I did this and most likely daniel is also. They scan stories for answers. This makse the test looked passed. |
