Hyperbaric therapy

I am just throwing this out incase anybody has heard anything. There is this guy I know that trys everything that comes along for is very low functioning son. This poor boy has been through chelation therapy, every diet and vitamin known to mankind and now dad thinks hyperbaric therapy is it. We are fortunate to have one in town and I am considering it too.  Any thought?

Aloha, Renee

Yikes!  Like Sensory Deprivation Chambers?  Do you know what it's supposed to accomplish?
I know there's no medical danger in it, but I can see it adversely affecting my son mentally....it's taken lots of work to get him to trust me...I'd hate to lose that!
Curious to hear what the goals would be though.
~LesleyThe way I understand it, it floods the brain/body with oxygen. You are right that you are contained in a small chamber. It is supposed to work great for kids with cp, diabetics, stroke patients, etc. There is some annedoctal evidence that it helps kids with autism. Not sure why...who knows how the brain and the connections really work.  I guess I should throw my money at therapies that actually work and if I have money burning a hole in my pocket...we can all go down hyperbaric chamber to enhance our overall health.

My DH's lifelong friend and business partner, who also happens to be an OT, actually bought a hyperbaric chamber to do treatments at home with his 3 yr old daughter who has CP.  He gets inside of the chamber with her and holds her during the treatment.  He's thinks it may be helping, and takes the stance that it can't hurt, because oxygen-rich blood is so good for the brain anyway.  It was cheaper in the long run for him to just buy a machine than to drive into the city (they live in a very rural county) and pay the clinic prices.  He says she really enjoys the time and usually naps during their sessions.

This is the first time I've heard of it's application with autism patients, however.  I tend to agree with Lesley, it would be a very difficult environment for ASD kids.  I can't even imagine - it seems like the psychological risks may definitely outweigh the physical benefits on this one.....................who knows, maybe we'll all be raving about it a year from now!
