I hope you're doing okay after your surgeries! I'm sure the transition to high school is scary. I know that my son is only in 4th grade, and I'm already scared about the transition to middle school. I have a collection of resources for the Transition to Adult Life here:
http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17860&am p;KW=transition
The first link there is to the National Center for Secondary Education and Transition ("Creating Opportunities for Youth with Disabiltiies to Achieve Successful Futures"). Maybe you'll find something helpful there (http://www.ncset.org/).
Otherwise, I hope some parents who have high school kids will see your question and be able to help you.
Good luck with everything. Keep us posted.
I think the OP was talking about a "real" diploma - not a specialized one. I'm not sure what employers think when they see a "specialized diploma" so I understand her concern.
I apologize that I don't have any advice here. Do you have to choose between a reg hs curriculum and Life Skills? Is there a program that mixes them - so he can take some of both?
Also, if they don't have a self-contained classroom and your son requires one - Don't they have to create one? Or find a placement where he can go that meets his needs?
Wow, I can't believe he wouldn't get a diploma. We had kids in my special ed department in high school get a diploma. They got a specialized diploma (along w/some others in the school)but they still got one. They also got to do graduation as well.Hello everyone, it has been a long time since i have been here but i have had a few surgeries first a hysterectomy and now shoulder surgery...... my question is concerning my son going into high school next year they have no self contained classes and if he takes life skills he does not get a real diploma i have set up a appt. with the schools EC department but i am so scared for him i am beside my self please help me.
