Can anyone provide me with a good example of a prior-written-notice letter? I've never written one and would like to know how exactly to word one, I have about 5 to write one subject is The School denied an adequate program placement - how do I go about writing this type of prior written notice letter were it doesn't look too uneducated?
Here is a link to NorwayMom's collection of sample letters:
I once tried a prior written notice letter. I quoted chapter and verse of the educational code. All I got back was two sentences that read along the lines of "We believe that this is the best placement because we think so based on our vast experience."
Assuming that you know what you want and want to know why it was not offered, I have heard that its better to write a letter along the lines of "At our last IEP meeting you denied our requests for ... because of these test results ... and ..." and finish off with a "Let me know if this is a misunderstanding, and if so, could you explain it to me." The reasoning went that in this sort of letter you control what is discussed, and what points have to be argued. Just requesting PWN is vague and the real questions won't be addressed because the SD knows just as well as you do what you want in writing. But now it is already in writing and the SD has to explain it.
In that sort of letter it might be a tactic to appear uneducated so that the SD will spend more time explaining the placement (or lack of it) to you and you might get more information than otherwise. Dad2Luke&Alan39395.6678935185
