A thousand thank you's, NorwayMom !!

I went to my meeting with the head of spec ed armed with info. When I felt he was about to give me the run around I started pulling papers outta my file and laying them on the table in front of him. It didn't take long to get all the important things I was asking for!

We are now top of the list for the autism spec., a woman I know and trust. The staff will be trained in moving Sam safely, if needed, and I am invited to this all-day workshop. Sam will return to school full-time Nov 19 (next week is a short week, not enough time to get supports in place.- Oh, and consultant is v. sick and pregnant) The district will provide 2 full time para's -to protect the students and staff

I did an awesome job of advocating for my son! I'm so proud of myself.

I could busy myself reading your links all day~they are great for sending to teachers too!:)

Thanks so much!

I am in a tank top right now..it's almost 80' degrees here in Texas

The Safety Plan on page 140 falls right into your needs.  I don't suppose your school could call Peel District (who made the form) for tips...

I hope things get back to normal for Sam soon.

Excellent resources!  I'm definately adding this to my favorites.  I did look through all of Chapter 4.  I can't believe how much stuff they put online!

Thank you, thank you! This canuk needs all the Canadian-based info I can get - eh.

Sam is still not in class after the Oct 22 meltdown.. This week Sam has been allowed into the school for 2 hrs a day, ONLY if I am there. They call it home-bound service (used for sick kids) but my home is way too small to have the para here, so they allowing us to use the school.

Today I meet with the head of spec ed. to see if we can't get this straightened out. The school requires an Emergency Plan, I require proper documentation, knowledgeable  and compassionate staff and an option that does not include Sam being locked into a room alone.

Wish me luck.

We're not too bad right now NorwayMom! We only had to wear three layers under Halloween costumes and didn't feel chilled to the bone, like last year!

I haven't looked at the resources, but I'm guessing they will get added to my "Favorites" list. I have to start a folder entitled "NorwayMom's Resources" like some other folks here have!

Today I ran across an online book called "Effective Educational Practices for Students with  Autism Spectrum Disorders:  A Resource Guide".  I think it's put together by the Ministry of Education in Ontario.  Here's a link to the book and the various chapters.  Chapter 4 (Tools and Techniques) is a MUST SEE:

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/asdappen dices.pdf - Here's a link to the entire book, but it's much easier to view chapter by chapter.

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/asdfirst .pdf - Chapter 1, Foundations (Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders, Program Planning)

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/asdsecon d.pdf - Chapter 2, Teaching and Learning (Instructional Strategies, Differentiated Instruction, Visual Supports, Structured Learning Environment, Assisted Technology, Sensory Considerations, ABA).

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/asdthird .pdf - Chapter 3, Communication and Behavior, covering behavior management, communication, social skills, and Aspergers.

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/asdfourt h.pdf - Chapter 4, "Tools and Techniques".  Includes many useful forms, checklists and tips shared by various schools.  My favorites are:

Social stories on answering the telephone (p. 184), joining a conversation (p. 187), taking and making mistakes on tests (p. 194-5), my morning routine (p. 196), different kinds of touch (p. 199)

Communication Observation Form - Requests (requesting various things by pointing vs. creative verbalization and everything in between), p. 180

Checklist for Higher Level Communication Skills, p. 181

Sample Communication Functions, Observations Sheet.  For recording how often the child greets, requests, jokes, etc. and writing down examples thereof.  p. 183

Inventory/Assessment of Functional Skills in Secondary School (such as entry routines, locker routines, etc.)  Starts on page 124.  Thorough!

Strategies list for accommodations in the environment, communication, instruction, motivation, self-regulation and assessment.  p. 136

Checklist for creating an autism friendly classroom, p. 137

Safety Plan form, crisis protocol, ensuring positive school environment.  p. 140

That is an awesome resource, Norwaymom.   (I just skimmed through chapter 4, but I definitely want to look at things more closely.)  You are the queen of resources.  Hope you are staying warm way up there in Norway!

I'm glad you liked the online book, xiangnong.  I'm doing my best to stay warm - staying inside by my cozy computer rather than going outside in the blustery fall wind.

We have pretty high humidity in the fall, and that wet cold wind just cuts right through you.  But it never gets as cold as it does in Minnesota, where I'm from.
