We were walking to school and there is a little boy that spends some time in the special ed room with Mason. His name is John and I have talked to Mason about him a few times. Anyway this morning we were walking to the door and John came by and said hi to Mason and Mason said "Hi John." That alone made my heart jump. Sometimes he will say hi to someone, but not use a name. So then John asked Mason to play. Mason didn't respond, so John asked me if he could play. I looked at Mason and asked him and he said yes. So John ran over to the slide and Mason followed. My heart was leaping and I was jumping for joy inside. I was standing there like a little kid with this huge smile on my face, just looking for someone to say "hey, are you seeing this??" Mason went down the slide once and came back and said he wanted to go to the door. I asked him if he was sure and he said yes, so I told John that maybe Mason would play with him some more at recess or lunch time. John happily nodded and walked off to play with the other kids.
It wasn't much, but I just couldn't control the excitement I was feeling. I'm sure you can relate to that feeling!
I'm going to make sure I really talk to Mason a lot about John and things he can say to him or play with him. Just keep reminding him of John and how fun it could be to play with him!
I'm just so excited!! YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!
That's fantastic!AWESOME, fantastic, magnificent!!!!! SOOOO happy to hear this!!!!!You have got the Wii, that may be a lot of fun!So great to hear, I can imagine how big a smile you must have had!...helps give me hope too that my kiddo will eventually want to make friends also.Thats awsome, indeed, with age comes progress, and when you see stuff like this occure you know later in life things will be alright.
Thanks for all the cheers guys!!
Even my dh was excited about this. Usually he is the one to say "I knew it would come or happen," he is happy about the progress but he is more laid back and then "I told you so" kind of guy. But it works well with my constant worrying and pessimism!
But when I told dh he was really good at going to Mason and starting a good conversation with him about it! He got some good info from Mason. John eats McDonald's with him (they earn stars at school and then the spec. ed teacher buys them McDonald's for lunch.) John brings cars to school, and John touched him and he didn't like that, lol.
The conversation alone was amazing, but seeing how observant he was of another child puts it over the top!!
And I will be careful with my coaching!
What a big social step for your son.
Hooray .
I know what you mean. DS has being running around the house all day asking for his little "girlfriend" Elise (NT). She is out of town this weekend or I would have taken him to her immediately. It helps that I love Elise's mommy and we are already planning a year 2030 wedding for the two of them! He also noticed two dogs playing in a yard today and told me they are "friends". So I know he "gets it".
Congrats on a HUGE social accomplishment! Our children continue to amaze and delight!
