We are the proud parents of 14 month old twin boys;
both are delayed, and one meets the criteria for
autism. We will be moving to Houston in January, and
we see this as the perfect opportunity to initiate
early intervention for our sons. We are a little lost
and need help getting started.
We would love to network with other parents who have
been through what we are going through right now. We
need to know how to navigate the system, so to speak,
to get the most out of what the state has to offer. We
need to know how HB1919 affects my insurance
decisions. We need to know what facilities or ABA
therapists are recommended. We are full of questions,
in particular:
1) Is there any general consensus as to which program
or programs are the very best Houston has to offer?
2) Are the waiting lists long?
3) Do we need to go ahead and enroll our children now?
4) Can we bring a diagnosis from an out-of-state
psychiatrist?
5) Are state services provided through the school
systems or the universities?
6) Can we use state and private services?
7) One of my job offers would require that I purchase
my own health insurance, possibly through the Texas
AMA. What do I need to know about how my insurance
decision would affect my childrens' coverage?
8) Would it be worthwhile to attend the November 8th
FEATHouston meeting in the Woodlands?
Thank you in advance. We are hoping to get together
with other Houston parents once we get out there.
I live near Dallas and I think the law has changed as far as getting services like ABA/ Speech/OT.. ect provided for our kids and getting it paid for by insurance and schools but your child needs to be under the age of 5 so your boys are very lucky..we did private ABA and speech~all was out of pocket for 3 years and she is doing great:) Feat is a wonderful organization and what we used here to find therapists and other families..DAN doctors and resources in our area. Not sure how to get the ball rolling for you other than finding ECI in your area for an evaluation. Best of luck and keep us posted:) The Woodlands are so beautiful:)
Greetings ,
I want you to know that I am a mom of a 14 yr old son. who lives in Alaska and is being forced to move to seattle washington in January as well. I was informed from the hospital for children there that they is many resources out there that will assist in the transistion of the move. OKAY! they say. I have not found any that will help with out the contingous 48 states. So my son is sol. it seems like. as it looks now it is totally out of pocket and the insurance states that since we are deciding to move on our own that they will not pay for his insurance part there. I am at a total lose. All i want to so is do the right thing for my son since we fly out of town every two weeks to see the dr. there and YES! insurance pays for it . maybe somebody out there has some information to assist me as well as you. I wish you the best of luck and a very safe trip. Stevens mom
