It lasts a while, but not a very long time depending on how they react to the slip up, how much, what it is...
payne's mom - is it like starting over when u cheat, or is it an effect that just lasts a few days...I was thinking holiday dinners, special occasional treats...
I would love some opinions on whether it is okay to cheat occasionally, and what the ramifications are...
Thanks!
Kristi
from what I could tell with Payne when we were doing the casien free diet - any (even the slightest) was awful. He'd start acting the way he was before we had him on the diet...ADHD beyond all belief!
You know two of Abby's main quirks is that she is very hyper and has a hard time focusing on tasks. Believe or not I have not yet tried the casien free diet. She only eats about three different things as it is (which prob all contain those ingredients) I don't know why I am so hesistant, The thing is if she ever wants to try something new I take it like a miracle, I can't say no because I don't have it casien free right on the spot. How can you be on that diet with a child that is so limited to what she already eats?
Yes we have noticed a difference. Jay used to have horrible gas and constipation. Both have been so much better. We have noticed some very nice language gains recently. I don't know if it is due to the diet/enzymes or school or maturity. Jay shows signs of candida so next we are working on fighting that.
I don't do the GF/CF diet, but I wanted to jump in here anyway.
Anytime you go on a diet that eliminates certain foods, I think that the body tends not to react well to their reintroduction.
I always loved greasy, fried food (still do, just don't eat it any more). I could eat McDonald's all the time and never got a stomach ache. Now that I don't eat any food like that and eat primarily very healthy. If I decide to "slip up" when we're on vacation and eat a meal at McDonald's I'm in the bathroom an hour later with pains and diahrehea. However if I keep eating crappy for an entire week vacation, after a few days I'm adjusted to tthose foods and back to normal. I tried explaining this to my dh over the years and he thought I was nuts. (He would ask why I'd still be so careful about my diet on vacation and I'd try to explain that I don't want to spend my vacation in the bathroom.) Earlier this year my dh decided he wanted to lose weight and I helped him go on a diet and he started eating really healthy. This was a guy who used to eat chili dogs for lunch at least 2 days per week. After a few months of eating healthy he went away for a guys golf weekend where all diet went out the window. Apparently he wound up waking up in the middle of the night with horrible gas pains and spending part of the night in the bathroom as well. He told me he always thought I was exaggerating but now he's a believer.
Given what we've seen with our own diets and the ill effects of reintroducing foods previously eliminated, foods that never gave us problems before we started dieting, I would expect that slipping up on the GF/CF diet would also show some ill effects, especially that 1st day.
see...that's why we're all here....we never did the enzymes.
You could always try using digestive enzymes at the same time if you know there will be a minor cheat.
I use them with Riley but have not had an intentional cheat yet.. just a couple of accidentals with his wellmeaning but not so bright grandmother. Whether it was the enzymes or his gut has healed enough with everything else, we had no noticeable symptoms of the infarction.
I find the longer the kids are on the diet the more extreme the reaction when there are accidental slip ups. Its like they have become more sensitive to casein and gluten where as before a trace wasn't a big deal. Has any one else noticed this? Liz
I haven't noticed it personally with Riley- he has been gfcf for 15 months.
However I was reading about coeliacs disease today and they talk about how common it is for coeliacs to become extremely sensitive to dairy products so it would make sense for this to happen in the gfcf diets we put our children on??
It is my hope to just use the digestive enzymes and a modified diet in a few years time unless Riley chooses to continue full time.
Right now we use a modified diet, we don't allow any milk or cheese and try to buy as much gf food as possible. We also suppliment with a digestive enzyme before each meal that helps break down any gluten or casein.
