I live in Kentucky. I have contacted the Department of Education and Kentucky does not have it's own autism guidelins and therefore defaults to the Federal ones. Does anyone have any ideas on how to word my IEP to request an aid in the classroom for assistance? My son is non-verbal and currently in a NT classroom.
Thanks
Go to www.wrightslaw.com to get lots of education law help. The website is free, but one of the books they sell is worth every penny of the it costs -- FROM EMOTIONS TO ADVOCACY. Kentucky is REQUIRED by law to provide some sort of advocacy resources to parents. Call the State Ed Dept. (or mail or email) and ask them to send you the STATE REGULATION of IDEA 2004. Also, ask them to tell you what sort of special education advocacy resources they have for parents. You must request an IEP meeting for the specific reason of having the team recommend that the district provide an aide for your son. It will be a short meeting, where you will formally request an aide. If the team agrees, then the school will file the paperwork with the district, and once it has received district approval, an aide will be provided. I think that it is appalling that your non-verbal son in in a mainstream class without a 1:1 aide. If the team denies your request, you can file for Due Process. Don't let them get away with this. It's a fairly easy process, but many districts will try to bully you, and prey on your lack of information. Go get 'em
