I highly recommend the PECS manual, by Andy Bondy and Lori Frost. You can buy it at www.difflearn.com or from the PECS website http://www.pecs.com/
There is also a smaller book, cheaper too, called "A Picture's Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication Strategies in Autism" by Andy Bondy and Lori Frost that is very good. It is available on amazon, and the 2 other sites already mentioned.
Here are my favorite PECS information websites:

http://www.polyxo.com/visualsupport/pecs.html
PECS is the Picture Exchange Communication System. It was developed for indivduals who are non-verbal or who have limited verbal skills. You can read more about it here http://www.pecs.com/WhatsPECS.htm
Does anyone know of a good book or website for information on implementing PECS at home? My son is verbal, but his teacher feels that PECS would be helpful for him in initiating conversation and cutting back on the echolalia. I am having no problem finding the pictures and symbols, I just need some information on using them. His teacher offered a few suggestions, but I'd like to have something in my hand that I could refer to. Thanks!
Jen
Can you explain what PECS is?Hi!
PEC cards are pictures you use to communicate with your child. If you have a digital camera, it comes in handy. AJ does not use PEC as he needs to see the real thing..I guess. Even his teacher said PEC does not work for him. We sooo desperately NEED speech therapy, here! We are on our way to that avenue next week. AJ and I have met her and I have also talked to her on the phone. She said it is a loooooooonG journey, and there might be screaming, kicking, and crying involved when we FIRST start.
I "believe" the reason why we hafta fight sooo much is cuz autism is on the rise. Chances are they were not prepared for this "epidemic" and that is why they are soooo low in resources. Perhaps the "demand" was not there for such a career as this. However, it is NOW!
We really should applaud those out there that are TRYING their BEST to help our children! It is NOT the teachers' fault! It is those up "above" them that cut the resources from their school fundings. I just keep thanking GOD that there are people out there who are really and "truly" trying to help our children in NEED! sorry for rambling
gabu, thank you SO much for those links!! I went through them all - that's such great information! Also, I wanted to say that my son's teacher told me that going to Google Images, you can get photographs of many, many items. I couldn't believe the pictures that I found going on that search!! I actually found photographs of Quaker Quakes (one of my son's favorite snacks). That's an alternative to using the digital camera.
