as long as keith did not have 2,000 or more, it was approved. our ins claused all autism therapies so we were not covered by anything it his CIGNA is not covered.

So nice to hear a story where our tax dollars actually do some GOOD. Congrats to you!I know you are so releived! We can not get SSI but we did get Medicaid for our son. It is secondary after our HMO, but it helps us give him the care he needs that is related to his disability. I urgeall of you in the States, regardless of income, to contact your states Medicaid department and make an application for Medicaid for your child. There is a lot of paper work, but it can be such a huge thing for your child! Our goodnights are now deleivered to our door, without charge to us, my son's co-pays are covered (I spent over 400 dollars on co-pays alone in the month of May, which is why I decided to apply for his Medicaid), our HMO had a 250 deductible for OT, this covered it. It will assure that your child gets what they need. I dont know about each state, but here, only the childs income (does he have property, trusts, etc) is considered. Then the state gets his records and a Dr determines if the child is disabled. My DH was so against this, he felt it meant that he couldnt care for our son, that is (imho) foolish!!!!!!!! We pay over 600 dollars a month for family HMO and we were having months when our our son's copays were another 400, not to mention the goodnights (he is not potty trained), he uses 2+ packs a week and they were running us more or less a hundred dollars a month.Well that gives me hope! Congrats!! I am actually leaving for the S.S office for my son's interview in just a minute. Has been set up for a couple months now... I pray that they approve him!
bring EVERY thing you have as far as support in his diagnosis! it took 6 weeks to hear of the approval, and that was b/c i called to check the status.....
be super kind b/c those guys can be real PRI%$&!
hth.

really really pleased for you Kate i don't quite understand the ssi system because it is different altogether here in the uk but i can read the numbers and thats all good for you and your family
well done you!!

Kate congratulatiolns i know this will help your family. sherryI am really happy that you found someone to support you! So all your "fighting" paid off! Good for YOU!!! It takes a really "strong" person to do this! Although I don't know you, I FEEL proud just to KNOW there are others out there who "refuse" to give up!
AJ's service coordinator advised us "not" to go for any type of social security. He said it is too early, and we would be turned down. I guess we will see as time progresses on how well he does with the therapies we are giving him. All I can do now is keep the faith and HOPE! jmpo---- CIGNA SUX! I laugh and cry at the same time when I remember we make too much money for SSI. Like any parent of a special needs kid couldnt use the money to help with co-pays and other things that our children need. I still urge you to contact your states Medicaid office. Here is a link that will allow you to make an initial determination of SSI qualification. May save someone a lot of time and effort, yet I was also told that if you do go through the SSI process, Medicaid (at least in my state) will use the information (if SSI did determine that your child was disabled) and it may save some time getting Medicaid approved. Gosh,.........WE live in Va and were told we made too much money for Curtis to qualify for SSI..............strange..........that they would tell you there is no income limit............I am going to check into this...........thanks for the info.........Congragulations on getting approved.......every little bit helps...........god bless. We have health insurance(our share 615 a month) and we qualified for my son to get Medicaid (not us). Medicaid is his secondary payor-our HMO is primary. What that means for us is that the Medicaid will kick in and pay for what the HMO will not. Anything our child needs is covered, as long as it is a covered Medicaid service. The Medicaid in our state does NOT consider family income (we cant get SSI), it looks at the childs income only. (does your child have real estate, trust funds, etc). While I know every state is different, I still urge all of you to google your states Medicaid services and call the toll free number, ask about waivers and programs for disabled children and help in applying for Medicaid coverage for your child. You do NOT drop the childs health insurance, it is just a supplement to it (or at least that is how it is here). I thought that when were denied SSI, we wouldnt qualify for anything, but that is not true. I went to the Medicaid office, the lady helped me fill out the paperwork and in about 3 months my son got his Medicaid card. they took into consideration for my son's ssi, the whole family income, but it is only his income and disability that will determine his eligibility. we did not qualify for m/c as a family, but because he is now deemed ssi recipient, he qualifies for everything else. kate State Resources http://www.nichcy.org/states.htm ALSO OMG i am so far behind on all of my bills, i have just stopped answering the phone. now i can at least get my finances straightened out and stop going broke on the med charges! i am so relieved by this, i hope all of you will try the systems. you never know if you qualify unless you try. take the time to fill out the applications, even the 14 page applications. at least someone will look into your case and tell you if you qualify. oh, and by him getting the medicaid, he will automatically get food stamps, not much just for him, but like i said, all of these little "not much" here and there programs, are adding up to about 1300.00 PER MONTH! right now, mu dh makes about 13,000 too little per year for a family of 7. oh, and now, instead of 3 hours of respite care per week, we will get 10 hours per week! kate I just called SSI, to check on the app i put in for keith last month. HE got approved for full benefits! this is sooo BIG! first, he will get the ssi full$ + he will get medicaid, for all of his medical and meds, then in virginia we have aprogram called HIPP which reimburses ALL of our whole families insurance premiums and co pays and deductibles, and he will get the pediasure and pullups home delivered! THANK YOU ALL so much for sharing the information you have learned, because it gave me the info i needed to get the best help for my son!!! YOu do not understand how much i value your help and sharing. this will mean about 1300.00 a month, suplement to my household! NOw, what are you waiting for???? how could that kind of assistance HELP YOU!!!!
kate WOW that is wondeful Kate! Good for you and your family! We already qualify for medicaid and WIC, but nothing else. I guess depending on how ds's eval goes next mth and what our state offers I might check into something. Medically he's covered thank goodness. But hey anything helps. I feel your financial burden, my dh just lost his job last week
Anyway I am almost in the same financial boat as you it sounds so I'm really glad you got that break and found a way for help for your son! Sounds like you are doing a great job as a mother and doing all you can for you family. Amber That is great news! I bet it is such a relief to have the help!
sherry
Thanks for listening!!!

People of all ages who have disabilities may be eligible for health care coverage through Medicaid. Each state runs its own Medicaid program. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Web site has general information about Medicaid, including who is eligible and what services are provided. It also has the Web address for each state's program. [Go to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Web site] [Find the Web site for your state's Medicaid program]

Pediasure alone is SO pricey, and my insurance won't cover it either! So happy for you!!!!

income requirements are for SSI? I'm pretty sure I don't qualify.
