Welcome to the forum.  I don't have any experience with what you're going through, but I can give you links for two topics on our forum which might be helpful:

http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19141&am p;KW=expert - various links for help finding experts, including advocates

http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17860&am p;KW=adult - transition to adult life resources.

Good luck with everything.

We have an autistic child that is now 21.  He was diagnosed when he was 6 and has been in the school system as an autistic child ever since.  We have tons of documentation on his diagnosis.
We raised him with the hope someday he would receive a proper placement in a group home.  He left school last year and we registered with the local community Services Board (CSB) this year for placement in a group home in the State of Va.  We were told by the school system that this was the correct proceedure to place him on a waiting list for a group home. The CSB has taken his case but after their review are now telling us  they have classified him as mentally ill, (not autistic)  and do not have any slots in a group home for the mentally ill (They do not even have him on a waiting list).  We don't understand what the CSB did, (he has always been classified as autistic) the CSB is not being  helpful in explaining what they did, and are basically telling us that he's not eliglble for a group home.  He is clearly autistic, cannot take care of himself and we want him to be properly placed.

We are not lawyers and do not understand what the CSB of Prince William Co. did.  Is the CSB required to explain to us in layman terms what they did, why they did it, give us a hearing to challenge any determination and to see my son is properly placed.  We are not in  a finacial position to hire a lawyer, or medical experts but do have tons of records showing he has always been autistic.  We are are quite confused about this whole process.  Is there a way to find an advocate for our Son in the State of Va.   Has anyone else gone through or heard of similiar circumstances.

is your son also classified as mentally retarded? if so see if you can go that route. my son also 21 i am in pa. we have to apply for waiver for funding for sheltered workshop. have been on list one and a half years. system stinks. they do not even have group homes in pa anymore. have to put your  child in a foster placement if you can't take care of them. if you have heard of all the problems with regular kids and foster care can't even imagine what would happen to someone who can't complain. we have two different waivers here one for autism and one for mental retardation. autism waiver new and only few get it so i have my son waiting for mr waiver. we are now going route of bugging our legislators about him having no services. i was told by someone else on this site who is a case manager that the funding goes to the squeaky wheel. sorry can not be of more help. How about help from mhmr.
