Eye tics

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic
My son has had an eye tic since he was about 4. Which is best described as a rapid, hard blinking. I noticed today it is very prominent. He came home from school very upset and argumentative. Can this be brought on from stress ? Should I be concerned ? Interesting you mentioned this ive been doing this all day today

its from stress mostly usually unpleasent sensory sensations in the eye after doing it for a few minutes the sensations usually subside

they are weird tingliling sensations the hard blinking for me seems to help releive them

upset and argumentitive i think is defienently from stressThanks.

I asked if anything was wrong and he said no he just was having a bad day. So it seems nothing terrible happened. I have an appointment at the school on 10/25 for a child study team meeting, I'll see if anyone knows if something happened during school time.

I put a call into his dr too.
youre welcome

Im curious i just wanted to know

what is a child study team meeting?I get an eye tic when I am really tired or really exhausted.  LizOne eye or both?  Stress absolutely can bring on an eye twitch.  But if this is not the only type of tic your child has, I'd keep Tourette's Syndrome in the back of my mind. This is the only tic I have noticed. He does have his finger up his nose all the time. I am going to talk to the school tomorrow. I want the teacher to try and make a note if she notices this tic in school.

Child Study Team is the group of psychologist, speech therapist, occupational therapist and other people that work in the school. We are going to meet with them and discuss Dales evaluation from the dr. They will test him to see what special services (OT, speech therapy, etc)the school can offer him.
Have to sympathize with the finger up the nose. Korban has been doing it for a year, usually when nervous or uncomfortable, and I just thought is was a korban thing. I guess there is always someone else out there, isn't there?

My sons tics wax and wane depending on his stress level.  He always has one of some sort of degree, right now it's heavy sighing, it's making me mental.

He definately does it way more when he is stressed though.  It will last for about 3-5 weeks and then something else will replace it.  He has been dx'd with tourettes in the past but it is also something seen in people with autism.

My son has done the hard, fast blinking in the past.  Usually when he is stressed about something.  I tend to think that it is one of his stims.  Good luck.

My middle LD child has tics too that come on during stressful periods, usually last several weeks, then go away.  This is apparently somewhat common (as per the neurologist I took him to), and would not be considered a tourettes symptom.

My oldest child who was dx'd with tourettes had severe eye blinking when he was 2 or 3.  So bad that I took him to an eye doctor certain there was something wrong with his eyes.  I found out after his dx at age 7 that this was an early sign of his tourettes.

On the plus side, he seems to have "aged out" of tourettes.  I have not seen a tic now in 2 years.  At one point when he was about 9 his head jerks were awful, probably coming every 20 seconds are so, he neck was in constant pain and the kids at school were making fun of him.
