Going back to developmental doctor? | Autism PDD

Share

Neel was diagnosed with Autism  by a child psychiatrist. He likes to see him every 6 months. My question is -what's the point? I guess he just wnts to see how he's doing- but honestly these visits just depress me. ANd they don't do anything to help DS>

If we're having problems or want to try meds then I may take him back. What do you think?

I would think it all depends on your child and how comfortable you feel about how he is doing and what care he is receiving. If hes not having problems with seizures, muscle tone, doesnt need meds and is receiving the services he needs and you are comfortable with how hes progressing and confident of how to handle things, spot changes and what to do if theres a problem then I can understand not having constant appointments to go to.  I think the reason they have check ups every 6 months might be to keep his case active since it can be an incrediable long wait should you want to just call up and get an appointment... Information would possibly have to be filled out again and updated maybe a new file started depending how long it has been since he was seen last. So should there be a problem if the case isnt evaluated every so often you might play heck getting in to be seen. ALSO I feel just as parents dont see how much a child has grown because they are there everyday and the change is gradual it could be the same with our children's progress or regression.... changes could happen gradually that we dont really notice but a doctor evaluating and LOOKING for changes might be able to spot them . Theres a reason infants go for a well child check every month,...... I feel theres also a reason for our ASD kids to see the doctor regularly for a check up too.   Just my opinion.

Very interesting...see...I was on EXACTLY the same page as SRS...I keep thinking after 4 appts. this September I'm giving my little man a break!  No docs unless it's a hospital visit or need for IVs, for a year at least!  But...that's an incredibly wise way to look at it Michelle...so true that we don't see the changes as we spend so much time with our kids.

Maybe it is good, at least in the beginning to go for those re-checks?
