what would you do?

My little guy, Max (NT-so far) turns one tomorrow. We had decided to hold off on the vaccinations until his 1st birthday. After doing more research, it was suggested that parents (who decide to go this route of holding off on vaccinations) wait until the child is 2 years old to begin vaccinations. Ok,, I think that is what we are going to do. My question is.... At this time I am nursing Max,,, I had wanted to wean him, but with our new plan of action, should I continue nursing to provide the antibodies? Not trying to spark a heated debate regarding the vaccination issue, BUT if I hold off another year, I want Max to have another line of defense against germs... What would you do?

Can you continue to breastfeed him for another year?   I nursed both my girls way past a year..the oldest one was close to 3 before I weaned her.  It is a personal choice and I hope you find the right answer:)

I would keep nursing. Two sounds like a good age. I would keep nursing too as long as he will nurse. It can only help.  Yep, I agree with all the other posters. Nursing can only help with antibodies and moe protection from germs. I am still nursing my 20 mo DS. Be prepared for comments from EVERYONE as to when you are going to wean him. I get comments all the time, and I just tell them "he will wean when he is ready, on our schedule and no one elses."

I think that nursing is great! I breast fed my daughter for 1 year, but I also think that I might have created some of her problems!! I didn't know she had so many food allergies. She got her first ear infection at 5 months old and then had one every 4 months after that. I didn't realize the close association between food allergies and ear infections. I am also fairly mercury toxic with tons and tons of fillings. As long as you are both happy and healthy, I would say go for it.

Aloha, Renee

We are holding off on most vaccines as well, had youngest childs done until 9 month visit and stopped after our 5 year old got his dx.  I nursed him until he self weaned at 26 months.  I didn't get many comments as he only nursed at naps and bedtime by then and if anyone asked I just said "Oh, we're working on it" very non commital.  I feel like it helped him as he has not been sick much.  I think it was worth it and it does help their immune system.

If it's something both you and dd can manage, I would nurse past age two.

I read somewhere that nursing past a certain age increases you childs chances of developing diabetes. Not trying to scare you or anything and there are so many dos and donts that come and go all the time im not sure how true it really is. You could probably google and find out some info about it.

I know my mother in law nursed her youngest past the age of 3 and the only issues he has is some visual processing disorder (dont know the name) and hes broken quite a bit of bones (hes a skater), but other than that hes a totally healthy 12 yr old.

Ooops sorry I googled and its if your formula feeding. Sorry!  I read the article a long time ago and must have forgot.thank you all...Max is actually sick right now- fever and cold. its gonna be a long night.....

I would continue with the breastfeeding. If you are worried about comments - maybe you could express? Lachlan was breastfed until he was 18 months, but stopped feeding from me at 11 months. I expressed and just fed him in a bottle/sippy cup.

Vaccinations are definately a personal choice. I wish that I'd had more information. Good luck with your choice.
