New Here Advice on Not Being Given Meds | Autism PDD

Share

Hi

My son AJ is going to be 4 at the end of Sept.  He does not take any medication.  I am TRYING to get through this without ANY.  If, however, he is still really hyper as he gets older, perhaps THEN I will try.  Sometimes he wakes up in the wee morning hours screeeching. I run in there quickly and rock him a bit...that appears to take care of it for now.  I keep telling myself it is growing pains.  He won't even take his vitamins anymore. He does, however, like his cough medicine...and benadryl.  IF the medicine tastes nasty,  he will fight me (kicking screaming you name it)  I am really glad we have this board to come to for information!  Thanks, AGAIN!

Hi!

Are you a stay-at-home Mom like Me?  How old is your child?  Please don't give up on your child!  YOU are your child's ONLY advocate!  Your child loves you dearly and relies on YOU.  Why would your hubby even CONSIDER instutionalizing him?!!  That is what they did waaaaaaaay back when.  There is HOPE!!!  This board will help YOU get through this!  Never, and I MEAN "never" FEEL alone!

Hi Screech

I am a stay at home mum because I have a health problem myself which is worsenend with my sons conditon, he is 8 yrs old and needs 24/7 care.

No I will not give up on my child my husband would go first but I am sure this wont happen cos he loves him to bits tooand his fathers been very good to him so far and also loves him to bits, he just falls apart at the seams every now and then

I have contacted social services this morning who will come and assess us and they have mentioned a buddies scheme I qualify for and given me the contact no for the yound persons disabiltiy unit locally.

I have also contacted nas locally to set up a befrienders scheme and will go back to my gp to sort out the psychiatrist so hopefully things will pick up but it wont happen overnite cos shes on hols till Sept 5th .

Anyway thanks for the input I have fought my way so far and will keep fighting we all have bad days and this morning the sun is shining again.

Hi Screech

I know I was glad to find this board too I can tell  you.  I felt the same at age 4 and fought against meds until now, god knows why because the parents and psychiatrist are so right they do get so much harder as they age.

My husband is now at the point of wanting him taken into care, I dont know what to do I feel so ill myself. Anway hope ur probs are not so bad in the future.

Best Wishes

Bev

HI,

Just popped into say hello, I am a mum of an 8yr old boy from Wales Uk just wanted to ask if there r simular mums from UK who have been refused medication when their child has high functioning ASD.

HIs physciatrist told us that it wouldnt help him but we r at the end of our tether.  Also if I do approach her what should I ask for he definetly has oppositional defiance, hyperactivity and probs going to sleep at night getting more difficult as the evening progresses.  I have heard of melatonin but dont know what else to look for as there seems to be so many.

Thanks

DollyDolly, I'm so sorry to hear you have such an uncooperative psychiatrist.
First order of business I should think, would be to find a more
understanding psychiatrist with experience in dealing with ASD/
Asperger's.

That being said, there are a plethora of meds that can help your son with
his issues, but only a psychiatrist can recommend the right combination.
As far as melatonin goes, it works wonderfully for us, and you only need
to use a very small amount. We crush the tablets into a fine powder and
give our son a small amount on the tip of his finger each night. We have
had no sleep problems since we started doing this about two years ago.
Good luck!

Hi Karen

Thanks for the supply, we were referred by our GP to this behavioural unit who assesed our child and up until now this has been the only avenue open to us.

I am currently asking for another appointment and also that my gp refers me somewhere else but I wanted to know what medications are using for the various behaviours I have mentioned.  Thanks for the info I will try it.

Bev

Dolly,

Here's some of my info if it helps. My son is almost 11, with Asperger's,
ADD and Compulsive Anxiety Disorder. I do not have any serious
behaviorial problems with him. Here is the list of meds he takes:
Strattera and Adderall XR for his ADD and Zoloft for his anxiety. If you
are looking for meds to help with aggresive behavior, Risperdol and
Abilify are two that come to mind, and there are several posters here
who's children are either on these meds or have tried them.   As I
mentioned, we use melatonin to help regulate his sleep. We also use
several supplements to help with focus and sensory intergration issues.
These include fish oil, magneseum, multi-enzymes and B6.

Hope this helps.

Hi Karen

Thanks for the info where do you get ur childrens supplements from, its hard to get them for kids due to dosages etc, would appreciate supplier, also is strattera and adderall on prescription or do you purchase.

Thanks

BevStrattera and Adderall are perscriptions. You'll need your psychiatrist to
prescribe them and keep an eye on the dosage. Adderall has been known
to cause aggressive behavior, so it may not be the right med for a child
with ODD. I get my supplements at General Nutrition Center, a
supplement store/chain here in the states. He takes 250 mg of
magnesium, 200 mg of B6, two multi-enzyme capsules a day and one
1000 mg fish oil a day. You shouldn't have any trouble finding these
doses at a health food/vitamin store. My son can swallow five or six pills
at once, so he has no trouble with this handful.
