Went for dx..what do you think?

Ok..so we finally got in to a dev. ped on Thursday.  She seemed like she knew her stuff.  She spent about an hour and a half with us, asking us questions, watching dd, etc.  Well we had a hearing test done a few months ago, but dd wasn't that cooperative.  Anyway, the audiologist seemed content that she could hear.  WELL..the Dr. wasn't pleased with the partial results..she tried to look in dd's ears and found they were compacted with wax.  That being said, and with her already 7 or more ear infections since about 6 mos old, she feels that maybe dd can't fully hear. From what the dr. saw and learned about her, she felt that she is NOT on the spectrum. We are seeing ENT on thursday and scheduling ear tubes and adenoid removal.  I don't want to get my hopes up that this will be her "cure." (Although that would be fantastic)  My question is...if she has a hearing impairment, would that account for some of the sensory issues that she has?  Like mouthing things, head banging when frustrated, etc?  I forgot to ask Dr. about this.  She wants us to get the procedure done, then another hearing test, then have another eval done in 9 months.  What do you think? 45GIRLS39371.5247337963I don't know enough to say much, but I think it is wise to take care of the medical stuff first before ruling it out of in. I have heard of quite a few kiddos with speech delay after having many ear infections. I don't know whether or not that would cause the sensory issues. Good luck and keep us posted!

NT kids have sensory issues too.  Ear infections can cause a child to head bang, as can teething.  Multiple ear infections can lead to a speech delay.

Has your daughter seemed clumsy or uncoordinated lately?  If so, that could be from her ears being impacted with wax.  I have a nephew who started walking late.  They discovered his ears were impacted and that was apparantly affecting his equilibrium.  My brother suddenly felt unbalanced at work.  He was fine once the doctor removed the wax from one of his ears.

I hope things go well with your daughter's ear tubes and adenoid removal!

Hearing problems have been noted to cause speech delay and social issues.  I am not sure about sensory issues. However, there was a recent poster here that put a video on of her son banging his head and it turned out to be ear pain.  Perhaps the mouthing thing is just a typical sensory thing.

I hope everything goes well for you and your daughter.  It would be wonderful if all of her issues  stemmed from a fixable hearing problem.

Keep us updated.

Hopefully the ear tubes and adnoids removed will be the key to what is going on...You will have to keep us updated!  I have heard that lack of language due to not hearing can lead to major frustrations and more aggression and also affects social too...

Sarah had ear tubes put in and it she did respond more to noise but still not enough to lose the diagnoses...

Best of luck!
