I feel like some of mine are and it's really difficult to know who's right or to not have to defend one or the other. I also have a hard time speaking up about things I don't like with services. I always want people to like me and I have a hard time making waves. I have to do it for Parker, but sometimes I feel like maybe they know better.
Also, If you do aba therapy, how long do you plan on doing it for your child? At what age would you stop?
Oh yeah. Definitely when you have 3 kids services and evals you are planning for.
We don't do ABA. I haven't tried it, but we are getting PRT for our youngest which is more in line with my theory on learning. Honestly, we couldn't even fit ABA in if we tried. I have 3 kids who have school and therapies and activities. I am not home consistently more than a 2 1/2 hour stretch a day.
That's a tough one. I just go with my gut when things conflict. Who is conflicting? Are they different types of therapists such as ABA and Speech Therapists? What kinds of things are they conflicting on?
My son has ABA/VB and probably will for at least a couple of years.
kdchaos--what is PRT?
My son will have ABA for a couple more years. Just to make sure that he
is able to learn from his teachers and also that he will able to socialize
with his peers. The fadeout from ABA will be a gradual thing.First lose the
shadow twice a week, than 3 etc., Then the home program will be
specifically targeted on pragmatics and social skills. The behavior
component will be forever a part of our lives. I think that the parent
training will be an ongoing thing as well. My son started ABA at 2.5yrs he
was basically non verbal, didnt orient to his name. He is a different kid
today. ABA has changed his life for the better and he is doing so well.
That being said, it is a hard thing to keep up.
Ask yourself this question? Does the program that you have seem to
stall? Do you find speech is blaming ABA and vice versa for making gains?
A lot of ABA agencies do not like Sensory Intergration Therapy is this
occuring? I have had issues with all of the above and it can be
overwhelming at times. What I do is try to see where my sons deficits are
and try to address them and target them with specific programs. This
way I am always working towards something. You need to speak up but
do it very politically as not to ruffle anyones feathers.
