"Can I have three friends?" | Autism PDD

Wow.  Little People.  That is so great Flip.  What a big step.

If you could put your finger on it, what finally clicked?

YepperBeeper--

We model a lot and my son appears to not be paying attention, but he is. For instance, we did a puzzle and when we were finished I made a train run over the animals on the puzzle. I made the animal noises, etc. and he looked at me as if I had two heads. Then, two days later we did the puzzle again and he asked for the "choo choo train". I got it for him and he did what I did.

I really like Floortime. Our consultant is so great and I love the video tapes that they evaulate and give me feedback on. I'm really not sure why it clicked all of the sudden. I just follow the suggestions of the current level he is working on if Floortime. I gently follow his lead and introduce things. He appears to reject what you are doing initially. So, I make what he does purposeful. But, this time he started to create his own play. I never gave the people names before. I thought that was very cool he would think to do that.

I don't know if this means anything or not. But, he has been drawing a lot more. Usually it is just letters and numbers. This week has been new. He draws a circle with a stem and calls it an a apple, he draws clouds, suns, etc. He draws faces and other things we can't discern and labels them like a couch. I thought that showed some creativity as well.

My son just asked me that today. We were playing with the Little People and Lego People and he wanted to have three people to play with. Friends are what he calls his classmates as well.

This is a huge step in play skills. He has named a few of the characters after some of his classmates. He says, "hi Matthew" and makes him walk up and down the bridge, drive cars and as they are driving away he says goodbye. etc. He is almost 4 now and a lot of this has come from the Floortime. I really don't push, just follow him. But, I was so excited to see this. I did not initiate it--it was all him. Really, it's begining pretend play and is very consitent with the level we are working on in Floortime.

Another note, he is doing awesome at preschool! We are going to start having the aide collect data and prompt him more in social situations. He is following the classroom routine quite well with minimal prompting.

Awesome! That's awesome news!!! Sounds like he's making great progress and developing some really nice play & social skills.Way to go! He is doing great!

Thanks all! He did such a great job with his Floortime Consultant today as well. She couldn't beleive the progress over the last 3 weeks. She was floored at the pretend play he was doing. It was a video tape day as well--so it will be nice to have that record and also get more suggestions (They send it in to the PLAY project folks for evaluation. It really just happened over night. He was also feeding the pictures of his classmates cheerios. He says, "here Matthew, eat" and then puts the cherrio to the picture. It's progress!
