article-facilitated communication | Autism PDD

An article about facilitated communication. Amanda Baggs/GTTO is mentioned.

I was onced interviewed for a job by a young women with multiple and severe disabilites who used a facilitator. It was a very interesting experience and one of the first that taught me not to judge a person's mind by what they do or don't say. I did not work long with her but I did learn a teensy bit about facilitated communication - it's not easy.

This technique has had lots of bad press, but I have been exposed to a young woman who does not speak out loud at all, but communicates in a very sophisticated, adult way using Facilitated Communication. She is an adult and has an adult aide with her all the time.  The aide translates what the woman with autism "types" thru her communication board.  It's worth looking in to.

I saw this too and posted it on another area of the forum.  Gtto has a comment in the comment section that is really more informative than the article itself, although I'm glad Dr. Gupta is talking about autism issues in the mainstream press.

Thanks for posting this.
