| Hi, im new to this board and was just wondering if my son has mild autism. At the moment he is on sen at school and has a iep for behaviour problems. What i was worried about is that since the age of 3 he has alway run/walk and made car noises. he is still doing it now at the age of 6. I never though much about it in the past as he was younger. but now i am wondering if it is a stim as he is still doing it at the age of 6. he is doing it alot latly, when i take him to and from school. No one at school has mention this behaviour to me, but i know he does it at break times on playground. Do you think i should mention it to the sen teacher at our next review meeting. Im not sure what to do, i dont want to waste people time. But i not sure if it might be a sign of mild autism.Does he have any other signs of autism, such as speech delay, poor social skills, sensory issues, lack of play skills, eye contact? If the behavior you mentioned is the only thing that comes to mind, it doesn't necessarily mean autism. My sister, who is not autistic, nor ever was, would skip back and forth in the living room as a young child, and flap her hands while doing so. She had none of the other autistic tendencies. She would say that she did this "flapping" to relax. She did this probably until she was 10 years old. She was fine in all other areas. Of course, if it is worrisome, and interfering with learning, then address it with his teachers and physician. Best of luck!! nakama It might be. Or maybe it is just SID. Many kids have just SID, or SID as part of ADHD, or post-institutional (overseas orphanage) issues, or preemies, or ... or ... My DS 4.5 has been hand-flapping, all weekend, again. Not even sure he would qualify as ADHD, anymore. Welcome to the forum. The car noises could certainly be an auditory stim, but it's not enough of a red flag on its own. To help you figure out if there are other symptoms of autism, you can try these diagnostic checklists. They will help you make the observations you'll need when/if you talk to a professional about it: http://www.childbrain.com/pddq6.shtml the ever popular childbrain quiz http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/aspergerscaleAttwood.htm l - Australian Scale for Asperger Syndrome, for primary school children (Asperger is an autism spectrum disorder without language delays).
