trying to move out of SC | Autism PDD

Share

I lived in SC because of Hubby's job. I lived in a corrupt town called Dazell. Don't get me started most military families home school their kids.  I was harassed and almost became a victum of insurance fraud. One of the local state paid drunk's tried to run me off the road but didn't. He filed a police report say a man in my husband car hit him. My husband was in another country. Then they said it was me. Our car had  no marks because there was no contact and the drunk could not keep his story straight on what time I passed him. The cop who came to my house wrote me a ticket and he had the same last name as the drunk.  My insurance company told Mr. Drunk he was not getting a penny. amberwaves39372.6486574074

mel,

wow, a mom from childrens center...jason is fully verbal and cogn. OK, he is 7 and non-complaint, finding motivation is so hard...i would love for him to stay in district but he needs a stronger behavioral mod, do you know if they have HF kids? is your nephew HF?

also looking into children's inst. in verona, high road in parlin, eclc in chatham (i think is low functioning but i'm gonna tour anyway)

what made Nick outgrow childrens?

thanks,

kristin

Hi Kristin,Nick became too HF. He was in with children older than him and helping them with there work. He actually was in my Nephews class for a couple of hours because the teacher there could give him higher quality of work plus I wanted him to experience a male teahcer. My nephew is lower end of the spectrum. Bascially he is 16 on a3/4th grade level. They told my sisterinlaw this yr. that will probably be it for him academically so he is in a life skills/job skills class now. They do have alot as far as job coaching. They even have programs for over 21 ,.They have alot to offer. But now i need to get Nick stabilized and safe again and try to bring him back to the functioning level he was out. I am just feeling a place he knows might be an easier transition. Unfortunately right now he will feel like its a slap in the face. He cannot handle our world and our world does not want him,but I have to deal with one thing at a time.I have nothing negative to say about Childrens Center. They had done wonders for Nick. I do kick myself every day for pulling him out and thinking he could make it. I guess because at the time I took Nick out alot of kids were leaving that were higher functioning ,not sure how those children are doing now.I am trying to find out. I remmeber Childrens Institue also was good but heard lower function, do not know about today..Let me know what you think..MEL

Welcome to the forum.  I'm so sorry to hear that you have had such a negative experience with the public schools in North Carolina.

If you don't get the answers you're looking for from our NJ/NY forum members, you can use the following topic to find links to free online searches for schools and other autism services, and to autism society chapters and support groups who could possibly answer your questions.

Good luck with everything!

Hi I am looking to move back to either NY/NJ. Our 12 yr. old son went to school in NJ private special school for Autism /mutilple handicapped children. I am originally from NY.I have a daughter that lives in Brooklyn now. Basically we do not care where we move if they can take care of our son. Its a long story but basically when I brought my son down to SC he was HFA. First time in public school. After a few months he got beat up on the bus. Now after a year and a half I am tired of fighting ignorant ,stupid people ,with no hearts. He now has many dx. Autism,Aspergers,PTSD,panic attacks.I do not feel and 2 of his drs. feel he can not be in public school. Does any one know of some good private schools for HFA/aspergers with counseling help.?It would have to probably be a school with experienced people who care and understand his dx. I have talked with his old school, but they said I would have to find  a district in NJ willing to send him out of district. That can be a fight. I did that when he was little. Any info, knowledge or contacts would be deeply appreciated. I also have a NT 14 yr old who is in honor classes and not happy with me right now.. Thank you for reading my sorry story.. MEL

can you tell me about Nick's regression?? did he lose skills?? was this due to the bus incident? what town is your mil in? sorry, so many questions, i will let you know about high road, i am touring next friday.

if there is anything you don't want to share on line, can you send me a private message.....are we allowed to give our personal email address here?

Thank you for anyone reading my post. This is a difficult time. Anyone thinking of moving to SC do not and if you live in NJ or NY stay because you have no idea what a heart break this is for me.

Does anyone know anything about Delware?Heard there are some good schools for Autism there?

I also have been researching schools and found one in NY .Melville NY which is part of Long Island. Does anyone have any info on the Gersch School( not sure of SP ).Also Eden II In Staten Island. I know the one in NJ but Nick would be too high functioning for them .Years ago Nick had some early intervention through them. They were wonderful but they even told me Nicks functioning level was beyond them.

My biggest problem is to find a district that will put Nick in a private school for all his needs. Both his neuropsy. and counselor said Nick cannot be in a regular public school after what these boys did to him. They are willing to write letters and talk too whatever school district we decide to move to.

Thank you again for listening..Sometimes I wonder how much more I can handle.Because not only do I have Nick but I have my 14 yr.old ,my husband has to find a job. He lost the job he had and we have a house to sell.

Hopefully there will be some meaning when we are done with our journey..Thank you MEL

So sorry you have to move for the sake of your son.  It is something that crosses my mind from time to time too.  Live in neigboring NC so understand what you are going through.  I hope other parents in those areas would be able to give you good insight.  Goodluck.  I might just do the same soon myself.

i am in NJ and currently looking for a private school with HF kids, i think my district is going to let me go since jason failed all last year, he made NO progress, he also has cp and uses a walker to walk.

anyway, i'm almost positive westfield, nj would let you go out...not to sure though.?? i tried to move to westfield a couple of years ago since i hear they are good about paying for out of district but it was too pricey....what if a  certain district is good about going out but thinks your child is too HF?? also, westfield, nj is a good district for your nt child.

i also met someone at sesame place yesterday that lives in mt. laurel and he was very happy with his district but i don't really know what he meant, don't know if his child is in or out of district?? he also said people in cherry hill are very happy?? not even familiar with these towns.

btw, i live in cranford, where were you in NJ, what school did your child attend.

i've tried to look on line for NJ parents rating their schools, i haven't had much luck?? are people afraid to talk??

i am going to see the children's center in Neptune this wed. it is an hour away, not happy about that and i am getting mixed reviews from people "in person" i guess it depends on your kid whether parents are happy or not..

i don't think i'm helping....let me know if you have any more questions...the blind leading the blind :)

Hi Kristin..Thank you for answering my post. Children Center of Monmouth County in Neptune was were my son was going. I was very happy with the school but Nick seemed to be out growing them at the time. Now of course things are different. I still have a nephew there .My sisterinlaw is extremely happy. He had been in about 3/4 other private schools. He is also autistic. They taught Nick skills he would of never learned in public school. But we thought we had given him enough knowledge and support to tackle the world. Were we wrong. Now its time to make things right again. I already talked with his teacher from there. He would take Nick back in his class. The problem is finding a district that would send him there again. Where we lived we went  to court when hewas 3 to get Nick out of district. We had to wait a month to get him in there.I have also heard pro and cons but when Nick went in there he had no lanuage. He came out talking and being dx aspergers. Originally he was dx autistic at 13 months old. So he had come along way. Hopefully I bring him back. You are right Westfield is extremely expensive. I do not know much about them.FRom my research now most districts in NJ have classes for autism so iys hard to get kids into private school. Let me know after you go to CHildrens Center. Good Luck MEL

childrens was good. so much support!! what a world of differnce from in-district.

i will let you know about the other schools i see when i see them.

kristin - wish childrens was closer

It takes a big toll out of me that there is no adequate program around here.  I had to put a lot together myself.  That is so draining!  Hanging around here for the sake of family unity.  Just hope I won't regret it.

Hi Kristin, I knew you would like Children Center. They are very supportive and caring and understand our children more than anyone I have met. I had a meeting today 6 hours was supposed to discuss homebound . I had 2 drs. note but would not approve cause did not have the right forms filled out..,accomplished nothing Nick home with me. I am callling in the am to see if I can get an appointment with my in laws district in NJ. They do not have program in public school so maybe be more open to send Nick to Childrens Center.I just do not have time anymore to look at alot of places .I need to get Nick more stable and higher functioning again. We will have to move in with them a while till we sell our house in SC.Got to do what I have to for our kids.

As far as anyone living in SC with a child w/ disability . If you can move, move. These people only care about there paychecks not the children.

Hopefully things will start looking up soon. Let me know how you make out..Another Mom from NJ from Childrens Center told me High Roads in Somerset is also very good and I think the other was the Learning Center not sure where that one was located. She said she liked them as much as Children Center...MEL

thanks, concernedpa

basal1999,

Welcome to the boards.  You might want to edit your post and PM your email address rather than post it out here.  That was one of the security advice on previous posts.

Hi, kristin,Yes, he did loose skills because of the bus then we were starting to build him back up and he got bullied again even though the school is not calling it that and he has regressed again. Even his doctors are seeing major regression.LIke for example: saying he does not know how to use microwave, not being able to wash himself, extremely picky about foods, smells ,watching shows for much yonger children, his pacing back and forth not remembering how to spell simple words, but then there are times he will act 12 again. He seems to go up and down and I can not tell it is happening till it happens. It is very sad and heart breaking to watch..MEl
