I did the very same thing when my ds started saying no after being nonverbal. I almost started to cry I was so happy

Very cool! Sound like the terrible twos are here! That's also great that he is shaking his head with the language. That is very difficult for a lot of kids with ASD. My ds is non-verbal and is beginning to use a few basic signs. He has
always been able to shake his head for no without being formally
taught. Well this week he has been using it like an NT two year
old.
His ABA therapist was asking him to point to the pigs in the story they
were reading. He shook his head No, she asked him again and he
shook his head No again then did it a third time with a slight smile on
his face. She then took his hand had him point to the pigs.
Then the next day I was putting him down for his nap and I was walking
him and telling him it was night-night time and he looked at me and
shook his head No, I said Yes, it is night-night time and he replied
with a big smile on his face and shaking his head no. It was so
hard for me not to laugh and smile. I smiled back and him and
told him it was time and he agian told me no. I then started
talking about others going night=night and after about a half-hour he
finally feel asleep. He only slept 40 minutes which isn't long
for him so I guess he really wasn't tired.
Anyway I just wanted to share this wilth all of you. He is
becoming so much more aware of things these days. Hopefully one
day I will hear a no instead of just shaking his head.
Sam didn't use the word NO until he was almost 4 yrs -but has since showed his mastery of the word to the point of being dx'd ODD last year
It's wonderful your babe is expressing himself ( and with a smile on his face!)
mama to Sam 8 yrs PDD NOS OCD ODD PPD and Alex 2 yrs
That is his little personality shining through! He definitely is understanding
the power of no. Its a very good thing.
