Help with IEP to address homework issues | Autism PDD

Share

We are having a case conf on Monday.  I am looking for ideas of things to write into the IEP that makes DS responsible for bringing homework home and completing it. Any ideas on requesting no homework at all?

I am tired of the daily struggles to get him to do the work.  DS brings home a sheet everyday with the assignments.  I have to sign and return the sheets.  As long as I sign, I feel responsible for making sure DS completes the assignments

Here is a link to an IEP goal bank.  To search the bank for a specific item, like homework, press Cntrl + F and enter "homework."

Good Luck!

I started with my sons Spec. Ed Teacher telling her what we were dealing with at home and homework. She started talking to the Autism Consultant about the homework issue. When I talked to the Autism person I told her exactly what we were seeing at home, didn't leave anything out. She suggested no homework at our IEP meeting. The principal did not want to do it, but was over ruled by the Autism Consultant. I had 2 people and myself pushing for this. An advocate might be able to help you get what you need. I would bring it up at every meeting and even call meetings because of homework issues. Make it your top priority at the meetings. Start the meeting with your concerns and make sure homework is your number one concern.  For me they never really knew how bad it was for us until I made them aware, it was a major issue and was negativity effecting our home life. When I got some people behind me and even informed the Doctor about it things changed. Also if it is causing your child to regress, it is not worth it and I would not put your family or child through it. You can also use regression as a reason to get it put into your IEP. When my child began talking about how he just wants to die because of homework and pooping in his pants at homework time, I made it top priority. It was not worth it for us and if he failed because he didn't get homework done then he failed. I could not take it anymore. Good Luck, let us know how it tuns out. I wish you all the best.

Unfortunately the excellent IEP goal bank linked by WiMom doesn't have anything on assignments other than the behavior required at school (ie writing down assignments, and following the routine of turning in assignments).  I also didn't find anything promising through a quick google.

I think that's because what you're talking about is not so much a goal as an accommodation.  Accommodations should definitely be on the IEP.  This article talks about why spectrum kids have trouble with homework, and gives examples of accommodations.

Good luck with everything!

Overall the case conference was encouraging.  We did a new IEP with more appropriate goals.  Dorian has to write the homework assignment down and have the teacher sign it.  This should eliminate some arguments.  The aide was writing down the homework, and Dorian would come home and pretend to be in shock – didn’t know he had to do anything.  Our behavior consultant provided a lot of ideas and asked many questions.

We will do another BIP.

The IEP is written as access to an aide daily – although Dorian has an aide that stays with him 90% of the time. Dorian has needed an aide the last 5 years.  We asked to change the IEP to state must have an aide in all classes.  If we should move or Dorian goes into residential, the IEP is very misleading.  He CANNOT manage without the presence of an aide.  We were told that when or if the time comes, the school is willing to change the statement in the IEP.  But our school corporation does not write IEP’s that way.

The aide came in and said everything was fine.  DS was completing work, not picking at himself, doing ok.  Then the biology teacher came in and said DS is not academically ready for her class and rarely attends.  When we asked why DS was not in class, we were told that the class moves too fast and he could not keep up.  The aide would get the daily assignment and work with in him in the resource room.  I had no idea DS was not going to biology class.

This lead to the discussions about DS’s current placement to earn a core-40 diploma and trying to graduate in 4 years.  We meet again in couple of weeks to review grades.

My son has "study hall" at end of day with his resource teacher (special ed teacher).  It is here that he zips through all his homework because he has made it his mission in middle school that he is never bringing homework home and does not need a backpack.  And it works.  She is there to help him/check work.  I don't know how he gets everything done in that one class but so far (knock on wood) he has (last year included).  He is getting 6 A's and 1 B so far and has done homework only 2 times this year at home.  It's crazy how determined he is to get it all done at school but I'm ecstatic I don't have to fight at home.  I will write in every IEP, "Must Have Study Hall at end of Day!"
