Caitlin,

I'm sorry this hurts you--I wish I could ban that word and so many others.  Unfortunately some people can be so cruel.  Your e-mail is already a start to educate people, maybe your parents would let you contact your local news and you can tell them why this word is so hurtful.  Who knows perhaps an article with your thoughts and feelings would be a great way to get your message across.

All my best Miss Caitlin.  God Bless!

Robin

The only problem with that is it is freedom of speech.  So you just have to ignore comments like that.  And no court is going get very specific on what people can and cannot say.

Caitlin,

Welcome to the board. I am sorry that certain words make you unhappy. You certainly seem to be a very intelligent person. I think that Robin gave you a great idea. Your parents might also be able to help you (with their permission), find a support group of peers that could come up with some ideas to increase public awarness. Just a thought.

Best wishes!

It is a hurtful word.  I don't see why they can't change it.  When I worked on Labor & Delivery, babies that were smaller than they should be were called "growth retardation."  Because of that word, people were really upset.  It was later changed to "growth restricted."  If it can be changed for a newborn baby, why can't it be changed all around!

I'm 15 and Mentally Retarded, and i'm tired of the R word, can some adults here help stop this by emailing the news and sueing people that use it.It's hurtful
