When your child started preschool how many hours did they go?
Did they receive ABA through the school? Did they also get OT, PT
and speech at school? What type of class did your child attend?
Does your school district have an autism class or did they have to go
out of district?
I am just wondering. Ds won't be 3 until the end of May but we
are starting to discuss his options. I am really scared to send
him especially out of district. He is making progress but it is
very slow in coming.
Thanks in advance for your support.
My little girl is in her 2nd year of preschool. She gets speech and OT at school. No PT or ABA, though her teacher is very knowledgable about what works with autistic children and has the energy and love to carry it out!
*ETA she goes from 7:30 till 1:30--5 days per week.
BonBon39366.6944212963I waited until my son had some skills before I sent him to preschool. He
however had 1:1 ABA . He did participate in a playgroup within our ABA
agency. Speech was always private with us.
He started preschool at age 4 1/2 with a 1:1 shadow aide. In retrospect I
would have started him at 4. It all depends of what types of supports are
available and how your child functions.
Mine needed the ABA to gain the skills so he could attend preschool. He
also needed to develop adequate language skills so he could interact with
his peers. We started at a typical preschool as well. Our experience was
very positive. My son was offered 10 hours of an integrated preschool through the district. We decided to go a different route and do a home ABA/VB program around 25 hours a week. And, then we send him to a typical preschool with a shadow for 5 hours a week. We get some funds through an autism scholarship to help pay for his program. We are only able to do this if we decline the school district's services. Ot, PT and speech were part of his plan in the school. We actually went for 3 months and it really wasn't much at all. He is making so much progress in his home program.
They started when they were 3.0 and went for two years of developmental preschool - 2.5 hours day, 4X week. They had some pull-out language therapy and, early on, Abbie had a 1:1 aid and the both got OT, but that went away when we moved to NC.
They are both in mainstreamed in kindergarten at 5.0 now with minimal assistence. They are having some trouble, but nothing over-the-top - no problems with academics so far, but Evie is having trouble focusing during large group instruction (she's great in small group) and Abbie has having problems with over-reacting, yelling and stuff, but nothing too terrible.
In retrospect, I think that developmental preschool is a very good thing for kids who are capable of learning from their environment and whos behavior is somewhat tractable, though I think there should have been more therapies for them when they were 3.0 and 4.0, but we live in an area that doesn't do much for kids who can "get by".
fred39366.2176388889My son went to pre school at 3. He started in a dev. delay class 4-5 hours a day. He had an aide, OT PT and speech. ABA was not considered a treatment at the time. By 3 1/2, I got him into the autism class at a school ten minutes away. Same hours and supports. I would get all you can at a school you think your child fits into best. If your cchild is really behind, it is probably due to communication and sensory issues, so I;d look for a class that had those supports, even if it is a little farther away.My dd is currently attending preschool (turned 3 in aug.). She goes 5 days/week for 2.5 hrs/day. No ABA but she is getting speech & OT 3x/week and PT 1x/week. There were a lot of programs that were full day around here, but I wanted to gradually introduce her to school and it seems like it's working out. I think a FT program for her would've been too much - maybe next year. We work a lot at home though too.....My son is 4 and goes to pre-school for 6 hours a day 4 days a week and 2.5 hours one day a week. He gets two hours of speech a week and splits his days between a Autism only class and a mainstream class. Pre-school has been great for him.
Hi Paws. My son is 3 years, 10 months and just started attending preschool. He goes 4 days per week, 4 hours per day. While there, he gets ST, OT and social training.
We won't qualify for ABA until I get a DX from a dev. ped. So far, I only have one from a MD and an educational DX of developmental delays from the district.
I am taking a course begining in November so we can do an at home ABA until he qualifies for a real therapist.
YepperBepper39365.8592939815My DS is attending public school for special ed preschool. He started the day after he turned 3. He now gets 5 days/wk supposedly 3 hrs a day (but he's not really...but it's in his IEP as such). He gets 1hr speech within group (and apparently we're gonna have to put up a big fight to get any more than that). His teacher is a BCBA, but she only does ABA 10 min at a time 3 times a week. She also integrates some RDI and PECS into her teaching.
When your child started preschool how many hours did they go?
Liam goes 4 days 6 hours and he goes 1 day for 2.5 hours. He also has a home trainer come two hours on the half day.
Did they receive ABA through the school? He has never done ABA, we only did floortime. ABA would not have been for him.
Did they also get OT, PT
and speech at school? He gets 2 OT sessions 1/2 hour each and 3 Speech 1/2 hour each. One speech is a pull out the others are in the classroom setting. He also has a program called Ready Set Go that his class participates in, it is additional OT. There are also about 5 times a day when he takes a 5 minute motor break to help him attend.
What type of class did your child attend?
He is in a full inclusion class. He is 3 and just started this September. He has a general ed teacher and a special ed teacher who is there full time. There is a 3:1 ratio in his IEP and the class can be no larger than 14, it is currently 12. The class is made up of 3,4,5 year olds. Mostly typical, there is one other boy similar to Liam and two other kids on IEP's for speech.
Does your school district have an autism class or did they have to go
out of district? He is better off in an inclusion class, I would have fought for out of district if they had not created this program for him though.
Good luck with your search for the best class for your ds.
When your child started preschool how many hours did they go? He is in intergrated preschool and ASD room from 9-3 5days a week Did they receive ABA through the school? yes- he receives ABA and floortime Did they also get OT, PT and speech at school? He gets speech 3 x week, OT 2 x, no pt What type of class did your child attend? he is part of the day in an integrated preschool at our public school and part of the day in the autism room at the same school Does your school district have an autism class or did they have to go out of district? we have an autism class and very few kids go out of district.
These are the services my son gets and he is on the milder end of the spectrum- dx with pdd-nos- he is 3.5 yrs old and now speaking in full sentences- there are times he appears "typical" but he clearly is effected more often by autism. We have been very happy with his school and did not have to fight (too hard) for these services- He also gets summer preschool and in home ABA and Floortime in the summer
