I found this disturbing....got the info in an email from an autism group in NYS. Anyone else heard about this?
Has anyone downstate, upstate or east/west heard about this tragedy? I'm on my way to work soon but when I get home tonight I am going to sit down and write them a piece of my mind!6 months is outrageous!
What a horrible story...the really sad part is that these cases seem to be growing in size! I agree this needs to made more public and will do my part!OMG this is heartbreaking. ![]() It is so hard not to type exactly what I think those two should get for what they have done to that poor child and his family. WHAT!? 6 mounths for manslaughter?? Thats maddness! I do understand these restraints that are used can be leathal, i dont know anything about these straps or what they look like or how they are used, but the fact that this has happened b4 tells me perhapse we should not be using them and another method should be employed. I am appauled that these guys, even after discovering he was not breathing/consious continued on with their activities, and then afterwards called the authorities, not even an attempt to revive him, just "oops, i think i killed him" And what a punishment!! Talk about gettin off with a slap on the wrist, seems these incidents occure quite frequently, really needs to be looked into and more accountibility established. Their are many things wrong with this system, but yet the answers on how to solve it seem quite simple and clear to me anyways...Does anyone know what kind of training these "caregivers" get? Background checks? This makes me angry beyond words!!! How the family of this boy must feel! One thing I have started doing is checking out the 'employment opportunities' section of any school or service my ds is getting. It has really opend my eyes of how extremly poorly qualified and compensated most of the direct care staff is. Most agencies do not provide training or resources for the staff either. A friend of mine started working as a 1:1 aide at minimum wage without receiving training. She had a client with autism and got punched in the face three times in the first hour. When she asked for some training on autism she was told there was none and that she would learn on the job. These are the circumstances that set a situation up for abuse. Consequently there are some services that I will stay away from especially if I know that my ds might have a hard time. It is not safe. I am very fortunate that I have that option, I know many parents do not. 6 months for manslaughter , sad
horrible beyond words One thing I have started doing is checking out the 'employment opportunities' section of any school or service my ds is getting.
Its definatly an issue primarly because while autism rates are ever increasing their is not enough trained personall to go around. These schools need someone ASAP and because they can be... well... anybody u pay um minimum wage and then you have just some person doing whatever job that got hired to do. This nation needs some new laws addressing this problem. Funding for school districs and training set up that will be manditory for those getting jobs to help out autistic children. This will also create a situation where if a person is certfied not only are they qualified (basic) to handel these kids approproatly and actually be of help but also get payed more for their new certification. Too bad all this funding is going to our wars overseas and new weapons systems to fight these wars. One thing the US really does not need ATM is a new weapons system when the old ones are still adiquate and their are plenty of these still modern ones, now we want NEW ones. Priorities are screwed up autism is getting so widespread more funding must be avalible to set up training classes to provide higher paying jobs and qualifications for those handeling these children who without good people will never be independent as an adult. I have to thank all those wonderful teachers and assistants who helped me in elementary school, without them i may not have done as well and I really want to see others do well also, but without the nessissary people/funding/training these days, how is that possible??? sorry for the long rant... perhapse i should have avoided the political rant regarding wars and our new weapons system, i support development and technological progress, and the fight against terrorism, but perhapse their are more important at home domestic issues to take care of ATM.... ok im done |
