Could it be dyspraxia?
Yes, it could be. I am not sure of the difference. I did look dyspraxia up last night and it did seem a lot like him.
WELCOME! I wish I knew a lot to help you but I do not. I think it very important that you see the Dr. I have read that many adults are being reassessed and rediagnosed. I am in your corner!!!!Hi
My son is 7 years old and is diagnosed with PDD/NLD. Alot of stuff on PDD. Not many people seem to know much about NLD. I have read a lot about NLD. A good book to start with is "The Source for Nonverbal Learning Disorders" by Sue Thompson. I also found a Psychologist nearby who deals with kids with PDD/NLD. Thank god for her. She was the first and only person that I could talk to and knew what I was talking about. She diagnosed him. I do have an appointment with a Neuropsychologist in September. We will make 8 visits. I eas told he will probably diagnosis him with the same thing. The only difference is the Neuro will know more and what parts of the brain has the problem in detail. I have been to other doctors but they seem to dismiss the NLD. Teachers think its just like a learning disability but there are certain characteristics that they don't understand.

I got these from back of the book from Sue Thompson.
I have a brother who is in his forties. Been diagnosed with Schizofrenia (I know that isin't correct spelling). I swear I see my son having the same problems when my brother was little. Kids with NLD that do not get help may get Schizofrenia. Which I would guess this has happened to my brother. Back then, they knew nothing about these things and my brother would get teased and have school problems but yet he was always at the top of his class inScience. Now he does not work and is on SSI.
But with help it seems these kids can have good lives.
Good Luck
Thanks for you response. I too think it is important to get a true diagnosis. It may not make it any easier for those of you with little ones just beginning, but I think you are lucky with all the new and exciting information coming out plus the new strategies. As a mother and teacher, it is very hard to think of the struggles he faced throughout his life because no one knew what it was. Thank God he was ours and we were there to protect and intervene at the most difficult times.
IWhen I ask 2 weeks ago to get a referal to a neuropsychologist to try to find a definite diagnosis because of all the knew scans and information available, he said we did not need to know and "retardation" was the reason. This is a guy who can do batting averages in his head of all major league players. Needless to say, he is no longer our Dr.
Thanks again. I plan on getting as much information as we possibly can .
I am new to this board and hope some of you can help me. My son is 30 years old and you may wonder what I am doing on this board. He is classified as developmentally disabled but that is as far as it goes. Twenty five years ago when he started school that was all that was available as far as a diagnosis and he went through school with that. Throughout the years as more information became available about autism, I could see many of the characteristics in Jon but not all of them. It has been very frustrating to try to explain his strengths and weakness to job coaches etc.
A few weeks ago I was reading some new information about autism and came across NVLD or NLD. It just about explained Jon to a T. We were so excited to find the information.
His Dr. was less excited but after some letters and calls I have him scheduled for an appoinment with a neuropsychologist in October. Does anyone know what we should expect from the evaluation? Do they do brain scans etc?
I know this is long. I would really appreciate any info any of you have!
