Getting Tested | Autism PDD

Share

Hi all- Although I dont suspect my ds has an GI issues or allergies to food, he is an extremely picky eater (will only eat carbs, and fruit and limited dairy). I decided that I need to seek out a therapist that can work with me on getting Ryan to try new foods, but I first want to get him tested to make sure that he doesnt have any physical issues related to any foods.

Im taking Ryan to see an allergist/immunologist next week so he can do some testing, but Im not sure what to expect and what I should ask for. He doesnt have any "visible" allergies or GI issues but I want to totally rule these out before I start down the road of working to get Ryan to vary his diet more.

Any helpful advice for me? Are there questions I should be asking the Dr or certain tests I should request?

Thanks for your help.

Alot of times kids with autism have certain texture and food prefrences and won't eat anything else both of miine are that way.  Is trying new foods hard for him or does he have an aversion to different textures of food? Guess would need a little more information.  With an allergist they can test for all food allergies these will usually be exhibited by rashs, swelling, etc. They will look at his diet and suggest different things to try one of the most common allergies is wheat abd the second is strawberries.   So I guess it is all dependant upon if it is a food aversion because of the texture or if he truly has something else going on.

Thanks-

I definitely think my son's issues are more of an aversion to new foods, but I want to get him tested for allergies/leaky gut/etc before I go full force on using behavioral therapy to entice him to eat new foods. I want to know what types of tests I should be getting for my son...

Hi Tkny...I am not sure what to tell you.  My son's GI issues were evident. Distention, runny stools, runny nose, etc.  but as amie points out, we also had a limited diet due to sensory issues.  Liam still has an aversion to watermelon and any textures similar.  Good luck, and let us know how the appointment goes.
