saying words backwards? | Autism PDD

Share

I was wondering if anyone else's child does this or have ever heard of this. Nikolas literally says his words backwards, kiss is ick (he drops the s) and fish is if. I think there are more but that is the most common.  the part that bothers me is that these are words he use to say correctly. This seemed to happen when he started decoding words, so I don't know if its related to that?? Is this regression? The SP thought he was playing with words, but I don't think so. I thought I read somewhere its a sign of hyperlexia, but I'm not positive I really read that and now I can't find it. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Sorry I don't know, but figured I would bump this up for you, it was getting lost in the crowd.

Hopefully someone will have some answers for you!

Daniel was doing this for a while. He's getting A LOT better about it now. I haven't read that it's tied to hyperlexia, but his teacher has decided he is hyperlexic. Does Nikolas say any two syllable words? What I discovered when Daniel did start saying two syllable words is that he wasn't exactly saying them backwards, that he was switching the syllabels around..Water was ta-wa.

All I did was repeat the word correctly (not correcting him) within a sentence. Like I said, it's gotten alot better.. Whenever he goes to say a new word that he's learning he does this then switches it around. I personally wouldn't worry about it. I decided he was just trying to decode sounds...

Thanks for responding. He has started saying two syllable words, or actually he is trying to say 2 syllable words, I usually have to say the word and then he repeats it and it is much closer to the actual word. The decoding sounds makes sense.
