Does anyone know where I can find an advocate in the Long Island area who does gratis work?  We are trying to have our daughter placed as a resident in the school she now attends as a day student.  The school would like to make the recommendation to our district.  The district, of course, is fighting it all the way.  The school suggested we find an advocate.

Thanks

Phyllis

You can call Long Island Advocacy.  They will probably recommend you to Long Island Advocates.  I've started working at LI Advocacy, but with a much different population (our salaries, such as they are, are funded by grants, so we can only work with the kids funded for that grant).  I cannot take private clients  (even on a volunteer basis) while I work for LI Advocacy. Except for beginning advocates (like SEPTA presidents who volunteer to get experience), I know no advocates who volunteer, privately.  Except for highly-paid private advocates who do pro bono work from time to time, but those advocates typically volunteer for extreme cases where the parents are without any means at all to pay. Sorry.  Your best bet will be LIAC (they will recommend your case to LI Advocates) or LI Parent Center in Lindenhurst.  Let us know how it goes.Thank you very much for the info.   I'll give them a call.  Will keep you posted.
