Ugh!!!!!!! My son has had the stomach flu that my whole family has had all last week and he had to go to the ER yesterday for fluids. He is holding down food and drinks now, but he won't dink much and I am afraid he will go back to the ER tomorrow.
Any suggestions????? He won't eat soups; his diet is pretty limited right now to goldfish, cheerios, tea and water as well as baby food. He won't drink milk or Pediasure which is very unusual for him when he is well, and he only drinks sips of Pedialite. We are doing popsicles and forcing him to drink every fifteen minutes or so........... any new ideas welcome!
If you can get 1 TBSP = 15 cc = 1/2 ounce in every 15 minutes and slowly increase over time, that will hopefully be enough. Ice pops, water ice, crushed ice, sucking on a clean washcloth dipped in cold water...There should be a WET diaper at least every 4 to 6 hours, make sure it's urine...If you can't tell because of watery stool, replace electrolytes with mashed bananas. That will also help firm the stool.
P.S. I'm a family doc...
Does he understand the concept of going to the hospital?
Last time I was in the hospital with my son from his last major surgery for his cleft, he absolutely refused to drink anything. He wouldn't eat either, but that wasn't necessary for him to be discharged ... just as long as he would drink. After 3 days of being stuck in the hospital, I was just so plain frustrated and wanted to get home. When I told him "go home" if he would just take a sip of water, he finally did. Maybe if you try to tell him you will have to go back to the doctor if he does not drink, he will finally give in?
My son lived off popsicles for a week once. I just gave them to him frequently and I've seen popsicles made by pedilyte. We also gave him Powerade--they make a clear frost flavor.
Poor baby--that's got to be rough for him. Hope he gets better very soon.
We tried the Pedialyte pops yesterday and he threw it at me
Thanks for the tips- I think that once his tummy settles down he will start drinking milk again like a champ- he usually drinks at least 32 ounces a day so hydration is usually never an issue- but he has never had this stomach thing before so it has been a challenge......... Sorry to hear your kiddo is sick. One thing that might help a little bit is preventing moisture loss through the skin. Make sure he doesn't sweat and rub on lotion to keep his skin hydrated (if he doesn't object too much). Some fruits have high water content -- like grapes and watermelon, or apple sauce. Hope he feels better soon!
