quick question about casein free ndiet | Autism PDD

Share

This might be a really stupid question, but is potato bread ok for a GFCF diet? I'm on the brink of starting my daughter on it - we've already eliminated regular milk - she's drinking Vitamite or rice milk.

Also, does anyone know if the Pediasure type supplements are ok for GFCF?

Thanks.

You'll have to check the label for any gluten or dairy ingredients.  There are many potato breads that still have gluten and casein in them.  We still haven't found a bread replacement that our daughter will eat (have tried many!)  Also, Pediasure has casein.  Try Rice, Almond, or Vance's Darifree Potato milk instead.  You'll have to supplement her with vitamins and fatty acids if her diet isn't well rounded.  Here is a link to a list of unacceptable ingredients:

Is it possible to do casein free without wheat free? My husband already did a test for celiac disease. Plus, we are both lactose intolerant, so I think it would be worth a try to only do casein.

Also, is there any milk that is casein free besides soy?

Yes, it's possible. For autistic children, though, they usually need to have both removed. You can start with the casein first.

We use Potato milk (DariFree), Rice milk (with added vanilla), Almond milk (sometimes chocolate), and save the soy for ice cream. The soy protein is too similar to the casein protien, so many say don't use soy too much. We can get away with using a bit of it.

We're just dairy free.  I tried to do both, but it was too time consuming and expensive.  We did allergy testing etc for gluten and casein as well as other foods and allergens.  Testing showed slight dairy sensitivity and gliadin antibodies within normal range for gluten but on the higher end.  We did both gluten and casein and stayed on it for 7 months but only saw a difference when adding back in dairy in general.  For our son it is a behavior issue when he gets too much dairy but he can tolerate some like occasional cheese.  Try rice or potato milk.  It takes some getting used to but it's pretty good.  We eventually switched to soy since it doesn't bother us.  We all love it and use nothing else!  Almond vanilla flavor is pretty good too but it might have more sugar than rice.  Potato is very low in sugar!
