Head on shoulder | Autism PDD

Share

My son has lately been moving his head on his shoulder.  He does this sometimes when he's running or walking, but also when he is just sitting.  It is a new thing.  Does anyone have any idea of the cause?

He is feeling sick (has a cold) so it could be congestion.  But we've checked both of his ears multiple times with the doctor and he definitely has no ear infection.  There is also no wax.  He's never done this before with congestion.  Could it relate to balance or vision issues?

Let us know if you have any ideas on what could be bothering him or causing this.  I don't want to assume it will go away when in reality "he is trying to tell us something" and we are not getting it.

I've heard of kids who looked at things using only their peripheral vision; kids who'd hold something up really close to their eyes; or tilted their heads to view things differently.

It might be a form of "visual exploration" which either infants or toddlers often go through.  I remember an OT commenting on Cole, who was holding his hand out & turning it this way n that, that he was just doing visual exploration.

Don't know for certain, but usually, unless a kid really gets something out of an action, they dump it after a short while.  It might be a sign he is just exploring his world in a different way.

Is he on any sort of neuroleptic (Risperdal, etc)?  If so, it could be a reaction to that.

Since you seem to have ruled out a physical cause, it might have a sensory origin.  If you fill out this checklist for sensory issues, it might help you see the new behavior in a sensory perspective.

Good luck with everything.
