DD also tapped on everything. This was what clued me in that something different was going on. She is 4.6 now and rarely tapps anymore. She has started to flap when she is excited. She used to not only tap but would do things in order. She would bring out every one of her stuffed animals each day to show us and always brought them in the same order. Pediatric nero said she had ocd tendancies and if it got worse and caused an interferance with her activity that we could try medication. The ocd has gotten much much better as she is getting older. She used to also have to close any open doors and would empty all of her clothes out of the chest of drawers everyday.

I know of an Aspie teen who taps like crazy. I get the impression that it's mostly when he's thinking ahead to something (nervous, wanting everything to be predictable).
Here are some OCD checklists that might help you make observations that a doctor might ask about:

Good luck with everything.
Hi all...
Erin doesn't hand flap....but she finger taps EVERYTHING.
I was wondering if anyone else has a child who does this. She will tap her way down the hallway, stop, crouch and tap the floor, tap people, tap objects....those little fingers never stop....I gotta get a camera and learn how to load a video to share......
My oldest was a tapper when his OCD with really full blown. He's managed to keep some of the symptoms in check. However, he isn't ASD.I have wondered many times if she has OCD along with everything else....
She does a lot of things over and over....repetive patterns that are impossible to disrupt.
How does one get an OCD diagnosis....developmental ped again ?
A neurologist dx'd my child with OCD.
