Placement question | Autism PDD

Andy is in kindergarten --- not doing so well isolated in class.

They are proposing increasing his ABA so basically he would not be a member of the or a class he would have one to one aba three and a half hours a day, speech, ot and ape.  They want his morning aba to take place in the classroom like in the back of the classroom in the corner.

Question: any one ever have this done?

My concern is how is this to teach him to be part of the group when it may teach him a us and me sort of thing.  This is basically what goes on in his current placement.

They told me when he can not handle the group he is in one to one right now with an untrained aide.  Most of his class time it is the rest of the class and then him.
They increase his aba and move him to the lower class it does the same thing.  They want to provide him a service by himself in the classroom that is what I do not like.

My opinion is if we increase the aba which takes him out of the group it should not have him in the same classroom.  That should take part in a seperate room.  I'm okay with the dtt/aba taking place at school but then he will only be part of a group for lunch and recess the rest would be one to one and increasing group as he can tolerate.

he will most definately repeat kindergarten--

Okay...here are my thougths....repeating kidergarten....no sweat....don't be upset by that....so he gets an extra year to catch up....that isn't necessarily a bad thing !

Your quote about him not being able to handle class with an untrained aide...DUH school district.....THEN GET HIM A TRAINED AIDE !!!  ( that is me yelling at THEM not you !!  )  So frustrating how they tell you what he can't do because of what they aren't giving him !!

Erin was in a self contained classroom ( all ASD kids ) and she was STILL basically segregated within her own class....she didn't/couldn't participate in group things ( Like your son....it was more the fault of the aide than her, but I digress....)

My journey with public school is ending.....I fought pretty hard for her to have success there, and was upset when the school recommended private....now that I have seen a few different ones, I have come to the conclusion that she will actually be happier at a private than where she is now.

Not to say that private is the answer....my point is .....you know your child best....where would he be best suited.....once you decide that, then fight like heck to make it successful and if the school is telling you that his struggle is due to untrained aide...turn it on them and demand a trained aide for him.

Getting back to your original question.....I don't think it is a bad thing for a child to be doing ABA in the back while rest of class is at circle....if that is what he needs for THIS TIME, then give him what he needs.  That doesn't mean he is now sentenced to a life of exile from his peers....he is getting what he needs so that he can be successsful later.

Best of luck to you both....it isn't easy, is it ?
