thankyou Loki, Im going to check the parents forum now.

Snoopywoman, my congrats for another victory for you and your  DEAR SON !!

each new accomplishment is so sweet, isnt it though?

Well, what we did when he got home from school was go through the next two weeks' menu and decide when/if he wanted to take hot lunch. He is DEFINITELY taking next Thursday because it is turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberries! I am thinking I want to go!

He wasn't sure about Friday's lunch, and the next week there are only 3 days of school and he only for sure wanted hot lunch on one of the days. BUT, he is planning ahead for this and it was a positive experience - hurray!

snoopywoman, This is such GREAT NEWS. I am so happy for you and your son, sometimes they really surprise us.

dylansmom, DS= Dear Son, DD= Dear Daughter. Look at top of Parents Forum for Abbreviation Appendix for others, posted by Camusa. Nice to have you here.

Hey guys,

Im really new at this, somebody please interpret for me what is "DS" and what is "DD" ??? I was thinking down syndrome and developmental delay?  anyway I am seeing it all over the posts and thought I would ask instead of assuming.. I am such a rookie !

I hope someday Mason will broaden his diet and at least try hot lunch.  I just wish he would do it now when it would be socially ok for him to still be getting help.  But right now it's the same thing everyday here...french toast sticks, red jello, fruit snacks, and a small bag of cheetos.  He did decide he wanted to bring his own drink for school this year rather than choc. milk and I talked him into the orange juice juice boxes instead of the koolaid type drinks.

Hope it continues to go smoothly!!

I wish Quinn would order school lunch. He used to get the pizza on fridays but hasn't done that since kindergarten. I have no idea why he doesn't want to get the pizza anymore. He wont tell me why. He just says he doesn't want to.

Okay, this may belong in Hangout with Friends and/or Updates and Successes. BUT, ds has been  very nervous about eating school lunch. I knew that the more he put it off, the worse this would get and his anxiety would get worse. Plus, they want the kindergarteners to have their account numbers memorized by January and I figured they wouldn't be as forgiving about it (most don't know his diagnosis) as we get farther in the school year.

So, together we chose a lunch we knew he would like off the menu last week. It was chicken strips, seasoned french fries, cranberries (which he LOVES) and veggies and milk. He was able to tell me everything he was supposed to do last night, but was still nervous. He has to get in the lunch line to get his milk every day - so he generally knows the routine, but was still nervous. He is mostly mainstreamed - just gets pulled out after lunch for rest time (he also gets social studies in there in order to give him a longer break).

I talked about it with the ASD teacher and I said I COULD come and try to help - but it happens that my daughter gets out of pre-school EXACTLY at the time that ds would be getting in line. The pre-school is actually in the same building, but still. I also didn't want to be the "mommy who has to help her son get hot lunch" - know what I mean? The ASD teacher had the ASD para kind of shadow him to make sure he was okay - and he did it all himself! She had to give him some direction when it came time to clean up his stuff - but the ASD teacher told me that ALL of the kindergarten kids needed TONS of re-direction at the beginning of the year when they were first learning, so it wasn't a big deal at all. Plus, he had to clean all his stuff up last year at Head Start - so that helped a lot.

She said he did AWESOME - ate everything on his tray. Then he went to the ASD room and asked for more! I had been prepared for this because ds is a HUGE eater. I had even told him that I would give him a "partial lunch" and that I would drop it off at the ASD teacher's room this morning. It was an orange, granola bites and baby carrots. He came into the ASD teacher's room asking if his mom had dropped off his "partial lunch" because he was still hungry. She told him I had and he ate all of that as well!

I also had dropped off a PB&J sandwich and cookies just in case he backed out at the last minute - but I told her NOT to give it to him unless he was starved and to not let him know about it. She called and told me she thought he might have eaten that too if she had told him about it! No one can believe how much he eats (I'm dreading grocery bills when he is in high school!

Anyway, I'm thankful it went okay. I was worried last night when he seemed so anxious. He didn't seem as anxious this morning, but definitely wanted to make sure I would remember to drop off the partial lunch!

That is great! big accomplishment! I hope one day Abby becomes interested in eating other foods , but right now at least she is a good eater with the limited food she eats.

YAY! That is a triumph I can TOTALLY relate to, with T, LOL.

Her big thing this year is to tell me every week, it's Thursday and that means biscuits for breakfast at her school!
